10 reasons to add a American Curl Shorthair to your family

Most American Curl lovers fall for this breed because of their iconic ears and the adorable expression they give.

American Curls are very easygoing and, although social, they do not have high needs. This makes them a breeze to live with and an enjoyable companion.

This breed is not restricted to specific colours or patterns and can come in almost any style or tone.

As a naturally occurring breed, American Curl Short Hairs do not have any genetic health conditions. As a result, most live between 15 to 20 years.

While most cats mellow out as they get older, American Curls continue to act like kittens. Thus, they will give you a lifetime of entertainment and laughs with their crazy antics.

However, despite their love for playing, they don't have super high energy levels and tire quickly. Thus, 5-minute interactive play sessions are usually enough to satisfy these felines.

These kitties are so laid back that they will find happiness in any environment, whether a small apartment or a spacious house. They are also equally happy to be indoor-only kitties or access the outdoors.

Shorthaired American Curls enjoy playing with other pets and are very friendly towards the animals they meet.

These cuddly kitties are never cold or aloof but are happy to spend time alone when needed.

You will always hear when your American Curl is around, but they don't whine or meow loudly to get your attention. Instead, they will greet you with a coo and quietly chirp at you when they are hungry.

Meet the American Curl Shorthair

The American Curl Shorthair is a small to medium-sized cat weighing between 5 to 10 pounds, with females typically being smaller. They have rectangular bodies, round faces, large walnut-shaped eyes, and ears that form a permanent swept-back positioning.

The American Curl Shorthair's iconic ear curl is due to a dominant gene mutation that does not cause any pain to the cat. However, their ear cartilage is not flexible and can easily damage if not handled with care. Every American Curl Shorthair owner should be aware that these kitties' ears are prone to ear infections, so you'll need to clean them regularly and carefully.

American Curl kittens are typically born with straight ears, which gradually curl from a few days old to around four months. By this point, the ears will feel stiff at the base and more flexible at the tips. Moreover, American Curls' ears do not all look the same. Some cats will have just slightly curled ears, whereas others have up to a 180-degree fold. However, they never fold entirely back so that they touch the head.

The American Curl Shorthair has a short, flat-lying coat with almost no undercoat. Their fur can come in a range of solid colours such as black, brown and white, and various patterns, including tabby, tortoiseshell, and Calcio. Likewise, their eyes can be any colour.

The temperament of an American Curl Shorthair

American Curls are most known for their kitten-like nature. They display high levels of playfulness and love to explore and seek out adventures and challenges. They are easily entertained and love to receive a new toy or even a new cardboard box. However, they may get bored of their toys quickly as they continually seek a new challenge. So, to avoid spending a fortune on cat toys, rotate their toys regularly.

Part of their playful nature means they love to climb and jump high. Therefore, your American Curl will undoubtedly find a way to reach the highest shelves in your home and the tops of the doors! Unlike other breeds, the American Curls playfulness does not subside when they reach full maturity. Instead, it continues well into adulthood.

There is more to these cats than their love for playing, though. They are equally affectionate and loving towards their owners. They love to spend their downtime cuddling up with their owners and will welcome you home with a head rub and soft meow. American Curls can be pretty vocal, but they are not particularly loud as they tend to use chirps and trills rather than meows.

Best homes for an American Curl Shorthair

The American Curl Shorthair is a naturally friendly and gentle feline that gets on with everyone and adapts well to new environments. Although they love being with their humans, they do not need you there 24/7. Their easygoing nature makes them suitable for working professionals, retirees, and first-time cat owners.

American Curls enjoy the company of other animals as well as people. In fact, they do better with a feline (or canine) friend than on their own. They do not show signs of distress if they are left alone during the day, but having a furry friend to play with while you're at work will make a massive difference to their wellbeing.

FAQs about the American Curl Shorthair

It is a sad truth that there are still unethical pet farms around that are only concerned about making money at the expense of the welfare of the animals. Breeding facilities like this severely affect the growth of the kittens and the health and wellbeing of the queens. Because of this, we are extremely strict about the breeders we work with and take extensive measures around this.

Our top priority is to ensure we only feature animals on our platform raised ethically. Therefore, to fight against pet farms, we only partner with licensed breeders who care for their kittens in their homes rather than commercial facilities.

If you're looking for a cat that is special both in appearance and personality, you'll love an American Curl Shorthair. They are playful, entertaining, and super cuddly, so they make the best company for any cat owner.

Their gentle and easygoing nature makes them ideal for first-time cat owners. Moreover, as they can stay home alone during the day, they are suitable for working professionals. However, even though they adapt to any environment, they need plenty of attention and interactive play to thrive.

Choosing your ideal furry feline should be an exciting time that you anticipate and look back on fondly. However, this is unfortunately not always the case with unethical pet farms and rogue breeders still in operation today. So, as pet owners with an immense love of cats and a passion for animal welfare, we wanted to make a difference.

At The Pedigree Paws, our mission is to hold a space for cat lovers to find and purchase a new pedigree kitten without stress, distrust or unease. In addition, The Pedigree Paws serves as a platform for the top breeders to share their healthy offspring and reach a broad audience of high-quality pet parents. We are thrilled with the feedback we have received from our customers who trusted our platform to find their new furry friend. Feel free to check out our reviews to read about these success stories.

The American Curl Shorthair is a naturally occurring breed with no genetic health concerns. However, all kittens are at risk of contracting one of several feline diseases, so we take measures to ensure your new kitty is fully healthy.

All The Pedigree Paws breeders take their kittens for an examination and blood check with a veterinarian. They also perform DNA checks on the kitten's parents before listing them on the site. Finally, before they send you your curly eared kitten, they will deworm, vaccinate, and microchip them.

The date your American Curl kitten will be ready to come to you will depend on its current age and needs. We require our breeders to keep their kittens with the queens until they reach eight weeks old, at a minimum. However, kittens adapt easier in their forever homes and are less likely to develop behavioural problems if they stay with their mum until they are 10 to 13 weeks old.

So while we prefer they stay together until this age, timescales vary as it also depends on the breeder's schedule. You will find an availability date or estimate on the listing for your American Curl Shorthair.

It's normal to have concerns around the health and welfare of your new furry companion when purchasing a pedigree kitten. Therefore, we allow our customers to have a video call with the breeder to virtually meet the kitten and its parents. By seeing your American Curl kitten and its parents healthy and happy, you will gain total assurance that they are coming from a good home.

Yes, every American Curl Shorthair kitten on our platform will be registered with a major breeding association, usually TICA or CFA. The breeder will send you the official documents with your kitten, which are recognized and valid globally.

At The Pedigree Paws, we have strict regulations for allowing breeders to sell their kittens on our platform. Likewise, we do not work with pet mills that care only about making money without considering the animals' welfare. Instead, The Pedigree Paws only partner with breeders that demonstrate high morals and a deep passion for feline health and welfare.

Along with meeting our in-house regulations, our breeders also closely follow the international pedigree association rules. Therefore, our customers can trust that their shorthaired American Curl has grown up in a caring environment with sufficient attention and socialisation.

We're proud to say that our breeders raise their kittens in their homes, where they freely nurse with their mother and wean only when ready. This is a stark difference to kitten mills and commercial breeders that keep kittens in pens away from their mothers, forcing them to wean too young.

When kittens grow up in a homely environment around humans and other animals, this interaction and socialisation shape them into loving house pets. With this positive human experience, your curly eared kitty will be confident, friendly and transition quickly to its new home.

Although American Curl Shorthairs are sociable and adaptable, leaving the comfort of their mum is a huge transition for them nonetheless. Thus, we advise creating a soothing environment in your home so they can feel safe and at ease.

To do this, we suggest setting up a cosy space in a corner with some blankets, a box and even a furry teddy. Your kitten can retreat to this safe place whenever they feel scared or overwhelmed. If they seem very anxious, keep them in one room for the first few days, away from noise or busy household activity.
