Meet the Burmese

The Burmese is a muscular breed in both appearance and feel. They are short, stocky cats with a rounded appearance, large round eyes, tall ears that are rounded at the tips, and strong chests. Males tend to have stronger, more developed jowls than females. Their heads are wedge-shaped and their large round eyes are set far apart on the face, which gives them their characteristic alert expression. These cats have slender legs, with the back legs being slightly longer than the front ones. Their whole appearance reinforces the incredible agility and strength of this breed.

The short, close-lying coat of Burmese cats boasts a glossy, sleek appearance and is silky to the touch. The most widely recognised coat colour of this breed is a dark sable brown, however numerous other colours have been developed in recent years including blue, lilac, red, chocolate, cream, and tortoiseshell varieties. Coat colour has no effect on eye colour in this breed as all Burmese cats have expressive gold or amber eyes. Burmese kittens are born with distinct darker shaded areas on their coats which fade as they get older. Adult Burmese cats are known for their solid, glossy coat colours however the face and ears can be darker than the rest of the body.

Burmese Temperament

Burmese are incredibly affectionate and highly intelligent cats, that love to be wherever their owners are! Due to their Siamese ancestry, these cats are quite chatty and have no issues telling you when they want something. However, their voices are significantly softer than Siamese cats. They love nothing more than curling up on your lap and may even join you under the sheets at bedtime. They are very social cats so they thrive in the company of others.

Due to their high intelligence, these cats love to play interactive games with the family and enjoy the stimulation that comes with clicker training. They can be taught to perform a whole host of tricks from playing fetch to learning commands. For this reason, Burmese cats need to be provided with plenty of stimulation which can come in the form of puzzle games, regular training, or fuss from every member of the household!

Best Homes for Burmese

Burmese cats are extremely social so they don’t do well when left alone for long periods. For this reason, they are best suited to a home where someone is home for most of the day. They are fairly adaptable felines so, as long as they get the attention they require, they can thrive in most home environments from apartments to large houses. These cats are very playful and tolerant of young children, which makes them the perfect choice for families.

Burmese cats have been known to get along well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs however you must ensure that you introduce them properly to avoid any incidents. It is best to introduce Burmese cats to other pets when they are young, to increase the likelihood of them getting along.

Frequently Asked Questions About Burmese (American) Kittens

Why choose an American Burmese kitten from The Pedigree Paws rather than elsewhere?
We pride ourselves on only working with the very best licensed breeders in the industry. This guarantee assures our customers that their new kittens are healthy, appropriately weaned, and well cared for. Even though kitten and puppy mills are illegal in the UK, there are still a number of unlicensed breeders that raise these animals in unsuitable conditions to make money. Here at The Pedigree Paws, we want to fight against these unethical pet farms which is why we only work with breeders that uphold the highest standards of animal welfare.
Is an American Burmese kitten the right pet for me?
Burmese cats come in two distinct varieties; American and European. Both breeds are incredibly affectionate, playful, and curious! They thrive on the attention of humans and have been known to literally follow their owners around the house looking for a fuss! They might even join you under the covers at bedtime and will walk right up to strangers, unlike many other cat breeds. The difference between the two breeds is apparant in their appearance. American Burmese have a much more rounded and stockier appearance with large round eyes, full cheeks, and large ears that are rounded at the tips. European Burmese are more slender with slanted eyes, and a more chisselled face and muzzle. Their legs are generally slimmer with slender paws, whereas American Burmese have larger, more rounded paws. Due to their highly social natures, all Burmese cats need to live in a household where someone is home for most of the day otherwise, they can suffer from separation anxiety. These beautiful felines are also highly intelligent so they respond well to clicker training and should be provided with plenty of opportunities to play and exercise. They almost have a toddler-like personality so you will need to ensure you keep an eye on your excitable feline to prevent him from getting into mischief! Both American and European Burmese are known to be chatty cats that love to have a conversation with their owners at any time of day. They get along well with children, cat-friendly dogs, other cats, strangers, and everyone else in between! Both breeds also get along well with each other as their temperaments are very similar.
Is The Pedigree Paws trustworthy?
Choosing a breeder can be overwhelming as there is so much choice. Fortunately, we have done the work for you! We scour the UK and Europe to ensure we work with only the very best breeders which will offer you the reassurance that your kitten is healthy. We pride ourselves on being completely transparent so feel free to check out our testimonials to see our success stories for yourself. To date, we are proud to say we have successfully rehomed hundreds of kittens into loving forever homes.
Are American Burmese kittens from The Pedigree Paws healthy?
Yes, definitely! All of our kittens are fully health checked by a licensed vet and we also ensure they are fully vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped, so you don’t have to worry about it. Like all cats, both the American and European Burmese breeds are known to be susceptible to a number of health conditions, including orofacial pain syndrome and diabetes. So, we make sure all of our kittens come from parents that are DNA checked. We also DNA test all of our kittens to check if there are any genetic mutations present that may cause health issues later in life. If no issues are present, you will know that your American Burmese cat is healthy and unlikely to develop health conditions during its lifetime. We know that early weaning can be detrimental to a kitten’s health. This is why we ensure our kittens are at least 10-13 weeks old before they leave their mother and siblings.
Can I see the parents of an American Burmese kitten?
Yes, of course. In fact, we recommend it! We will facilitate a video call between you and the breeder so you can see the kittens with their mother or both parents.
Will I receive the pedigree documents of a Burmese kitten?
Yes, all of our Burmese kittens come with internationally recognised pedigree documents from cat organisations such as GCCF, TICA, FIFe. The exact registration will depend on the location of the breeder.
Do American Burmese kittens from The Pedigree Paws come from good breeders?
Yes, The Pedigree Paws only offer kittens from the very best breeders. We only choose breeders that adhere to the strict breeding and animal welfare regulations that are set by internationally recognised cat organisations. Our breeders are very passionate about animals and dedicate themselves to ensuring their kittens are healthy and well cared for. So, if you buy from us, you know that you are buying a kitten that will develop into a well-rounded adult. We also follow a comprehensive breeder selection process that ensures all of our breeders treat their animals like family and look after them in their own homes.
When can I receive my American Burmese kitten?
Making the decision to add a kitten to your family is very exciting so we understand that you will want to meet your furry friend straight away. However, early weaning is known to be detrimental to a kitten's health. So, we prefer that our kittens stay with their mother until they are at least 10-13 weeks old. However, this is just a guide, and you can discuss the exact time scale with the breeder.
How can I help settle my American Burmese kitten into their new home?
American Burmese kittens are incredibly social animals so they should bond with you fairly quickly. However, like all cats, they can become nervous in new surroundings. Here are a few ways you can help your Burmese kitten to adapt to his new home: First off, we recommend that you ask the breeder to send your kitten with a towel or blanket that has their mother's scent on it. The feline pheromones given off by the mother are incredibly calming so will help your kitten to feel more secure. We also recommend that you only allow your kitten access to one room of the house at a time, to prevent him from feeling overwhelmed. Once your kitten appears comfortable in that one room, you can then slowly introduce them to other parts of the home. Due to their highly social natures, you must provide your new Burmese kitten with plenty of reassurance as he gets used to his new environment. You should also introduce new family members and other pets slowly, so your kitten has time to adjust.
