Breed traits and characteristics

Known for their gentle and extremely devoted nature, the stunning Egyptian Mau has many unique and wonderful qualities that make this cat stand out among other breeds.

Their appearance sets them apart due to their unique brow marking and dramatic eyes, giving them a naturally worried look. Egyptian Maus are also the only domesticated cat with a naturally occurring spotted coat and have an “M” shape or "scarab beetle” marking on their forehead. Their "tiptoe" posture makes their hind legs appear proportionally longer than their front legs, which give them a graceful look.

The Egyptian Mau’s exotic appearance fascinates many cat owners and enthusiasts. They find this breed unique not only because of their striking spotted coat patterns, but because of their remarkable intelligence and loyalty to their human companion.

They are powerful and athletic felines with exceptional leaping ability and are considered the fastest cat breed capable of boundless bursts of speed. Because of their lineage, they retain many characteristics of their wild ancestors, such as the Cheetah’s gait and a loose skin flap that expands from the flank to their hind leg. This permits the Egyptian Mau the agility and freedom in twisting and leaping.

Despite their astounding athletic skills and physical power, Egyptian Maus are calm and reserved cats. They thrive on being a part of a family but are wary of strangers. Early socialisation is important; otherwise, these cats can be easily frightened by unexpected events or noises. Egyptian Maus communicate enthusiasm or happiness by wagging their tail and kneading their paws. They may also talk to you with gurgles and trills.

This energetic cat breed is moderate to highly active. They are agile and powerful leapers and climbers – making cat trees and high perching spaces a must-have in a household with an Egyptian Mau. If they find that their perches are not enough, you can expect to see your cat on top of bookshelves and refrigerators.

Because of their intelligent and observant nature, Egyptian Maus can teach themselves to open drawers, cabinets, cupboards and doors. They also love to play with water, so expect them to learn how to turn on the faucet.

Egyptian Maus are devoted family feline companions. They get along wonderfully with playful children and other cat-friendly pets. While they have high energy levels, these high-spirited cats do love to snuggle with their human companion when they are feeling sleepy.

Meet the Egyptian Mau

The striking Egyptian Mau is a very regal-looking breed thanks to its wide round eyes, distinct M-shaped markings on its forehead, and graceful but muscular frame. These cats have wedge-shaped heads, medium-sized ears, and back legs that are slightly longer than the front which makes them appear as though they are walking on their tiptoes. The Egyptian Mau is the fastest domestic cat breed, capable of running at speeds of up to 30mph! This is thought to be due to the unique skinfold that runs from its flanks to its knees, which is a trait also seen in the cheetah.

Perhaps the most distinct feature of this breed is its eyes, as they are always a light gooseberry green colour. The unique set of their eyes give these cats their characteristic worried expression.

When it comes to the coat, this breed has a short dense layer of fur that is covered with distinct stripes and spots. Their coats come in a range of colours including bronze, black, silver, and smoke, with the silver colour being the most common. The M markings on the head are known as the markings of the scarab which is a reference to the Scarab beetle that was commonly associated with death and rebirth in Ancient Egypt. This breed also has a very distinct black dorsal stripe that runs from its head right down to its tail.

The Egyptian Mau is considered to be a medium-sized breed with males reaching weights of up to 4.5kg. Female's weight between 3-4kg on average.

Egyptian Mau Temperament

The Egyptian Mau is a highly energetic and agile breed with an easy-going and affectionate temperament. These cats are extremely proficient climbers and jumpers so you must ensure you provide plenty of opportunities to exercise, in the form of cat trees and perches. Egyptian Maus are incredibly affectionate towards their owners and love to chatter with them at the end of a long day. Unlike many other breeds, the Egyptian Mau can make a wide variety of vocalisations including chirps, whistles, and chortles. Despite their affectionate natures, Egyptian Mau’s can be shy around strangers and new pets in the home. They can also be a little skittish with children at first. These cats like to choose who they interact with and when, which makes some people believe that they are stand-offish. However, once you get to know an Egyptian Mau you will have a friend for life!

The Egyptian Mau is a very intelligent breed that loves to play and interact with the family (on their own terms of course!). So, ensure you provide your Egyptian Mau with plenty of toys, interactive games, and love. They are also incredibly curious animals so expect to find yours exploring the inside of your wardrobe or perching on top of the bookshelf!

Best Homes for Egyptian Mau’s

Egyptian Mau’s are incredibly energetic so you must ensure you have the space and provisions to keep them entertained. Otherwise, they can suffer from boredom and become destructive. These cats are incredibly loyal and tend to attach to one person in the family over all others but they don’t do very well with strangers. For this reason, they are best suited to quieter homes that do not have too many visitors on a regular basis. These cats do get on well with children but they are not particularly good with other cats due to their highly territorial natures.

The Egyptian Mau is a relatively healthy breed however they are prone to developing certain health issues, just like other cat breeds. For this reason, we ensure that all of our kittens come from parents who have been DNA checked. In addition, we DNA test all of our kittens to check if there are any genetic mutations present that may cause them to develop health conditions later in life. If no issues are present, you will know that your Egyptian Mau is as healthy as he can be!

Of course! We will set up a video call between you and the breeder so you can see the kittens with their mother or both parents.

Yes, they do! At The Pedigree Paws, we only offer kittens from the best breeders in the UK and Europe. who adhere to the strict breeding regulations set out by internationally recognised cat organisations. We do not work with commercial breeding facilities on any level. Our breeders love their animals and ensure that all their kittens are raised in their own homes. So, if you buy from us, you will know you are buying a kitten that will grow into a healthy adult.

It is a very exciting time when you have just purchased a new kitten, so we know that you will be eager to meet your new family member! However, early weaning is detrimental to a kitten's health. So, we prefer that all our kittens stay with their mother and siblings until they are at least 10-13 weeks old. However, this is only a guide, and you will be able to discuss the exact time scale with the breeder.

All of our kittens are raised in loving home environments. We do not work with commercial breeding facilities. All of our breeders follow the highest standards of animal welfare so you can be certain that your new kitten has been appropriately weaned and socialised.

Egyptian Mau kittens can be very nervous and shy in new environments so it is important that you give your kitten the time he needs to settle into his new home.
We recommend that you ask the breeder to send your kitten with a blanket or towel that holds their mother's scent. The pheromones given off by the mother are extremely calming so will help your Egyptian Mau kitten to feel safe.
Initially, we recommend that you only allow your kitten access to one room of the house at a time. Once your kitten appears comfortable, you can slowly introduce him to other parts of the home under supervision. Ensure you check each room before allowing your cat to roam, to make sure there are no dangerous areas such as exposed wires that could cause him harm.
Your Egyptian Mau kitten is likely to be very anxious in the beginning so make sure you offer him plenty of reassurance but don’t crowd him. You should also introduce new family members and other pets slowly so as not to overwhelm him.
