Breed traits and characteristics

The European Burmese is a very loving, intelligent, and playful cat breed. They thrive on human companionship and will want to participate in everything you do! Alongside their cousins; the American Burmese, European Burmese cats are famed for being very dog-like. Instead of shying away from strangers, these cats will walk straight up to them for a fuss.

Expect these cats to always want to be on your lap or play interactive games, such as fetch, with the family. They also tend to get along well with cat-friendly dogs and other cats. Both the American and European Burmese are very similar in temperament. They are playful and curious right into adulthood. They are also very skilled climbers, so no furniture is out of reach for these confident kitties.

The differences between the two breeds can be seen in their appearance. Perhaps the most easily identifiable difference is the eyes. European Burmese have slanted eyes with the top line of the eyes being completely straight. American Burmese have large, fully rounded eyes. In fact, the whole body of the American Burmese is rounded, with soft contours, full cheeks, and ears that are rounded at the tips. European Burmese are much more slender and oriental looking. These cats have slim, straight legs, a chiseled wedge-shaped face, and erect, wide-set ears. Both the European and American Burmese are great choices if you don't mind a complete lack of privacy. These cats are devoted to their owners and will want to be a part of everything you do, from checking your email on the computer to preparing meals and watching television.

Overall, the European Burmese is a stunning, slender, but muscular cat with an endearing frown-like expression. They are an excellent choice for busy households that enjoy the constant attention of an affectionate feline companion.

10 reasons to add a Burmese (European) to your family

Burmese cats are one of the most affectionate and attentive cat breeds in the world. They just love to be around people and want to be involved in everything you do.

Burmese are smart, energetic cats that love to play games with the family. They will quickly learn to retrieve toys and will eagerly join in any play sessions with people of all ages.

These cats are a joy to train. They are eager to please their owners and respond very well to clicker training. Teach your Burmese a variety of tricks and commands to keep their minds stimulated.

Burmese cats only need to have a short brush once a week because they have a very short coat that lies close to the body. Saying that, feel free to brush more often if you want to because Burmese cats love the attention!

These cats keep their kitten-like playfulness right into old age. So, they are incredibly fun to be around and will enjoy dashing about and investigating every nook and cranny of your home.

Some cats shy away from children because they can be loud and boisterous – not Burmese! These cats will lap up the attention from children of all ages.

These cats don’t have thick layers of hair, so they don’t shed too much compared to other breeds. However, it's important to note that no cat breed is 100% hypoallergenic.

Burmese cats will seek attention from any human, whether that’s their owners or unfamiliar visitors to the home. This is one of the many dog-like traits that people love about this breed.

Once they get to know you, you will have a friend for life in a Burmese cat. They will want to be with you every minute of the day and will love to curl up on your lap after a long day.

Burmese cats are very vocal, yet they have a much softer voice than their Siamese counterparts. Expect your Burmese to want to tell you everything about their day!

Meet the European Burmese

The Burmese is a solid, muscular breed that is much heavier than it appears. American Burmese are rounded in every aspect, with a short muzzle, erect ears that are rounded at the tips, and thick round paws. Conversely, the European Burmese has a wedge-shaped head with wide cheekbones and a strong chin, which gives them a more slender, oriental appearance. These cats have noticeably slanted eyes and tall ears that sit wide apart on the head and held lower than the American Burmese. European Burmese have slim legs, an elegant, compact body, and oval-shaped paws. The tail is medium length and rounded at the tip.

Both the American and European Burmese have silky, short coats with little or no undercoat. The most widely recognised colour of both varieties is a dark, glossy sable brown. While the American Burmese comes in three additional colours; platinum, blue, and champagne, the European Burmese has 10 colour variations. These are:

Tortoise European Burmese cats have multiple colours in their fur with a base colour of either blue, brown, lilac, or chocolate. In all Burmese cats, the underside of the body is generally slightly lighter in colour than the back and legs. Their eyes are either amber or gold.

Burmese Temperament

All Burmese cats, whether American or European, are highly social. Unlike other cat breeds, a Burmese will happily run up to a stranger for a fuss. In fact, they are so affectionate that they are known as the ‘dogs of the cat world’. These cats can quickly convert any ‘dog person’ into a cat lover! Burmese cats should be kept indoors only because they are so human-orientated.

Burmese cats are also highly intelligent, so they love to play a variety of games including fetch. They respond well to clicker training and should be regularly stimulated with interactive toys and affection. These cats can be taught to perform a variety of tricks which they will happily show off to a willing audience.

Burmese cats don’t understand the concept of privacy. They will want to be around you all the time, whether you are cooking dinner or going to bed. They love to curl up on their favourite person’s lap whenever they can.

Both European and American Burmese are known to be chatterboxes thanks to their Siamese ancestry. However, their voices are much softer than their Siamese cousins. Still, they will be more than happy to let you know when they want something!

Best Homes for Burmese

Burmese cats do not do well when left alone for long periods. So, they are best suited to households where someone is home for most of the day. They will also enjoy being in active, bustling homes. These cats get along well with children and even other pets as long as they are introduced with care.

These cats need to be kept indoors because of their highly social natures. They do have a strong territorial streak though. So, make sure you keep them entertained with plenty of toys and games. You can even consider building a secure catio in your garden so they can enjoy the outside elements in a safe space.

Burmese cats are fairly adaptable. They will do just as well in an apartment as they would in a large house. As long as they get all the love and attention they crave.

FAQs about the Burmese (European)

As a company, we are dedicated to making sure that all our customers receive healthy, fully weaned, and well-cared for kittens. We ensure this by only working with the very best licensed breeders in the industry.
It may surprise you to know that kitten and puppy mills are still running in the UK, despite them being illegal. These animals are kept in inappropriate conditions which impede on their welfare. At the Pedigree Paws, we stand against these harmful pet farms and only work with breeders that uphold the best standards of animal welfare.

All Burmese cats are curious, playful, and highly human-orientated. They have even been described as ‘dog-like’ because they will happily run up to any stranger for a fuss, unlike most other cat breeds. Burmese cats are also incredibly smart and enjoy learning new tricks or playing games, such as fetch, with their beloved human companions.
Burmese cats come in two distinct varieties; American Burmese and European Burmese. While their personalities are the same, differences can be seen in their appearance. The American Burmese is rounded in every sense, with large round eyes, full cheeks, and rounded paws. The European Burmese is more oriental-looking with slender legs and slanted eyes.
Both varieties need to be indoor-only cats and given plenty of stimulation throughout the day in the form of training, games, or love. These cats do not do well when left alone for long periods. So, they are best suited to homes where someone is around for most of the day.
Burmese cats are chatty. However, they have a much softer voice than their Siamese counterparts. They remain kitten-like throughout their lives, so they enjoy receiving attention from children of all ages. They also generally get along well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs.

We pride ourselves on only working with the very best breeders in the industry. With so many breeders to choose from, making the decision yourself can be difficult. So, we have scoured the UK and Europe to find the breeders that uphold the best standards of animal welfare at all times. This process takes the pressure off you as an owner, yet you can still rest assured that your kitten will be healthy and happy.
Furthermore, we are completely transparent in how we run our matchmaking agency. Feel free to check out our testimonials from other happy customers. To date, we are proud to say that we have already placed hundreds of kittens with loving families.

We can guarantee that all our kittens are healthy and fully weaned before being rehomed. Early weaning can be harmful to kittens in a number of ways, including psychologically. So, we make sure that all our kittens remain with their mother until they are at least 12 weeks old.
Before you get your kitten, we will also ensure they have been checked over by a licensed vet and that they have been vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.
Like all breeds, Burmese kittens can be predisposed to certain medical conditions. To put your mind at ease, we ensure every kitten comes from parents that have been DNA checked. We also DNA check all the kittens to ensure there are no underlying health issues present that could cause problems later in life.

Absolutely. We will either arrange a home visit or a video call between you and the breeder so you can see your kitten with their mother or both parents. This will also give you the opportunity to speak to the breeder about any queries you have.

Yes, all of our kittens come with internationally recognised pedigree documents. The exact registration will depend on the location of your breeder, but all certification is done via trustworthy cat organisations such as TICA, FIFe, or GCCF.

Yes, they do. We are very selective about the breeders we work with. Our comprehensive selection process ensures that we only work with breeders who treat their animals like family and raise them in their own homes. Furthermore, we only work with breeders who uphold the highest standards of animal welfare that are set out by internationally recognised cat associations.
So, you will know that you are getting a healthy, content Burmese cat that will display the very best traits of the breed if you buy from us.

We understand that you will be wanting to see your new feline family member as soon as possible. It’s such an exciting time when you decide you’re getting a kitten! You will get the chance to speak to your breeder directly about timescales. However, we do recommend that kittens stay with their mother until they are 12 weeks old. This ensures they are fully weaned and healthy.

Burmese kittens thrive around people! However, it's important to remember that they can get nervous in new surroundings just like other cats. Offer plenty of reassurance to your new arrival but also give them the time to adjust to their new home in their own time.
Here are a few other ways you can help your kitten to settle into life with a new family:
We highly recommend that you ask the breeder to send your kitten with a blanket that contains their mother's scent. Cats have a very acute sense of smell so the scent of the mother will help to reassure your kitten in unfamiliar surroundings.
In the beginning, you should only give your kitten access to one room of the house at a time. Start with a small, quiet room where they can investigate without feeling overwhelmed. Once your kitten appears to be comfortable, you can then introduce other rooms as well as pets and family members. Don’t rush this step. It can take a few weeks for your kitten to fully settle into a new life so move slowly and offer plenty of reassurance along the way.
