Exotic Shorthair Cats & Kittens for Sale

The Exotic Shorthair was developed in the 1950s as a shorthaired version of the much-loved Persian Breed. They came about when cat breeder Carolyn Bussey attempted to create a brown Persian cat by crossing a regular Persian with a Burmese, before the gene pool widened to include other shorthaired breeds including the Russian Blue. The resulting Exotic Shorthair cats are known for their affectionate natures and endearing kitten-like appearance.

Meet the Exotic Longhair

The Exotic Shorthair is a stocky and heavy-boned medium to large cat breed with a large rounded head, full cheeks, small wide-set ears, and large round eyes. Their bodies are relatively short and compact, with strong thick legs and rounded paws with tufts of fur on the toes. Their tails are short and fluffy. Due to their Persian ancestry, these cats are brachycephalic which means they have flat faces and short noses which can predispose them to developing respiratory issues later in life. However, they are loved by families around the world for their teddy bear-like appearance and affectionate natures.

Exotic Shorthair cats boast a plush short to medium-length coat with a dense undercoat, which makes them easier to groom than their longhaired Persian cousins. These cats come in a wide variety of colours including black, silver, bi-colour, white, and calico (tortoiseshell and white). Their eye colour can also vary but are most commonly gold, green, or blue.

These cats are medium-large felines, weighing anything from 3-4.5kg.

Exotic Shorthair Temperament

The Exotic Shorthair is affectionately known as the ‘lazy man’s Persian’ due to its Persian-like sweet temperament and short easy to care for coat. These cats have become more popular in recent years for their gentle, easy-going personalities which makes them the perfect choice for families. Exotic Shorthairs are not as active as many other breeds and have an independent side which means they are more than happy to entertain themselves when their owners are not around. However, it is still important to keep their mind stimulated with puzzle feeders, games, and interactive toys. These cats are known to be incredibly devoted to their owners and will happily curl up on your lap when you are watching TV or even curl up on your shoulder when they are feeling a bit more adventurous!

Interestingly, males tend to be cuddlier than their female counterparts. Females generally have a more independent streak. Exotic Shorthairs are known to get along well with children due to their placid natures. For the same reason, they also generally get along well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs. They can be nervous around strangers at first but will soon warm up to them if they are given the time to investigate on their own terms.

Frequently Asked Questions About Exotic Shorthair Kittens

Why choose an Exotic Shorthair kitten from The Pedigree Paws rather than elsewhere?
At The Pedigree Paws, we only work with the very best licensed breeders in the industry. So, we can assure you that your new kitten will be healthy if you purchase from us. We fight against unethical licensed breeders that still operate in the UK and Europe, as they often raise their animals in unethical environments to make money.
Is an Exotic Shorthair kitten the right pet for me?
Exotic Shorthairs are incredibly affectionate companions but they are not demanding like many other breeds. They are more than happy to curl up on your lap given the opportunity but they are also more than capable of entertaining themselves when no one is home. These easy-going cats get along well with children of all ages, as well as other cats and cat-friendly dogs. However, they can be nervous around strangers; often choosing to run and hide rather than interact. They are not known to be a particularly active breed but they still benefit from the odd play session to prevent obesity. They love to interact with their owners so encourage your Exotic Shorthair to move about a bit with clicker training or interactive toys. Exotic Shorthairs are docile, loving, and form strong bonds with their owners once they get to know you!
Is The Pedigree Paws trustworthy?
Yes, we are. We pride ourselves on being transparent with all of our customers and follow a strict breeder selection process to ensure we only work with the very best licensed breeders in the UK and Europe. Since our launch, we have rehomed hundreds of kittens into loving homes. Feel free to check out our testimonials to see our success stories for yourself.
Are Exotic Shorthair kittens from The Pedigree Paws healthy?
Yes. We ensure that all of our kittens are given a comprehensive health check by a licensed vet before being rehomed. They are also fully vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped so you don’t have to worry about it. The Exotic Shorthair breed is known to suffer from a few health issues, just like most breeds. So, we ensure that all of our kittens come from parents who have been DNA checked. We also DNA test all of our kittens to see if there are any genetic mutations present that may predispose them to developing detrimental health conditions later in life. This way, you can be sure that your kitten will grow into a healthy adult if no issues are present.
Can I see the parents of an Exotic Shorthair kitten?
Yes, definitely! We will set up a video call between you and the breeder so you can see the kittens with their mother or both parents (depending on the breeder).
Will I receive the pedigree documents of an Exotic Shorthair kitten?
Yes, all of our kittens come with recognised pedigree documents from cat organisations, which can include the GCCF, TICA, or FIFe. The exact registration will depend on the location of your kittens’ breeder.
Do Exotic Shorthair kittens from The Pedigree Paws come from good breeders?
We pride ourselves on only offering kittens from the very best licensed breeders in the UK and Europe, who follow the strict welfare regulations developed by internationally recognised cat organisations. Our breeders are passionate about animal care which is why they raise all their kittens in their own homes. They also ensure that all of their kittens are well socialised and properly weaned before moving on to their forever homes.
When can I receive my Exotic Shorthair kitten?
We know that you will be excited to meet your new kitten as soon as possible! However, early weaning is known to be detrimental to a kitten's health and development. For this reason, we prefer that all our kittens stay with their mother until they are 10-13 weeks old. However, this is only a guide, and you will be able to discuss the exact time scale with the breeder.
Are Exotic Shorthair kittens from The Pedigree Paws raised in a family home or breeding facility?
All of our kittens are raised in the loving homes of our licensed breeders. We do not work with commercial breeding facilities. All of our breeders follow the highest standards of animal welfare so you can be sure that your new kitten has been well cared for, as well as being appropriately weaned and socialised.
How can I help settle my Exotic Shorthair kitten into their new home?
Exotic Shorthair kittens can be nervous in new environments so you must ensure that you give your kitten the time he needs to settle into his new home and offer reassurance wherever you can. If you do this, your new kitten will soon become a much loved and devoted member of the family! Here are a few other ways you can help your Exotic Shorthair settle into his new environment: At The Pedigree Paws, we strongly recommend that you ask the breeder to send your kitten with a blanket or towel that carries their mother's scent. The pheromones given off by the mother are extremely calming so will help your kitten to feel safe. In the beginning, we recommend that you only allow your kitten access to one room of the house at a time to prevent him or her from feeling overwhelmed. Once your kitten appears comfortable, you can slowly introduce other parts of the home. You should also ensure that you introduce new family members and other pets slowly so your new kitten has time to adjust to his new family.
