Breed traits and characteristics

The American Akita is the larger and more heavily boned of the two types of Akita. They were developed around the mid-20th century from the fighting dogs of Japan. The most obvious difference between the Japanese Akita and the American Akita, aside from their size and structure, is their coat colour. The American Akita is acceptable in all colours, while the Japanese Akita is only allowed to be fawn, sesame, red, brindle, or white. Furthermore, American Akitas can have pinto and black masks, unlike Japanese Akitas. In fact, this is already a disqualification in the show ring for the latter dog breed.

The American Akita belongs to the Utility group of dog breeds and is considered to be the largest breed in that category. Akitas originated in Japan, where they were developed to hunt deer, bears, and wild boar. Sadly, they were also used in fighting competitions because of their size and build.

Akitas are noted for their loyalty and devotion. These affectionate dogs are known to follow their human companions from room to room to keep them company!

However, American Akitas have a domineering streak, particularly with other dogs. They are independent-minded and highly protective of their pack. So, care should be taken when guests enter your home. You will also want to ensure your American Akita has been fully socialised and trained from puppyhood to curb this trait.

When it comes to children, America Akitas are loyal and loving. But of course, all interactions between them should be supervised.

Aside from their extreme loyalty, American Akitas are known for being very clean. They have even been described as cat-like because of their intense cleanliness and lack of the traditional ‘dog smell’.

10 reasons to add a Akita (American) to your family

Akitas are not big barkers, so if you hear them yapping, you know something is amiss. Moreover, unlike some other breeds, they are wary of everyone they meet, even if that person were to give them treats.

Besides barking at strangers outside the house, the strength and size of an Akita will make you feel safer in your home and while out and about. So if you've recently had your safety violated, this canine will help you feel at ease again.

Akitas are not scared of anything, and their fearlessness will inspire you to be more daring too!

Aside from being your personal guard dog, Akitas also serve as a comedian, making you laugh with their silly antics and hilarious games.

If you have an older child and want to introduce a pet into their life, an Akita is a top choice. Akitas are known for being exceptionally loving and protective with kids, giving them a friend for life.

When it comes to personal hygiene, Akitas are more like cats than dogs. They don't like to get smelly, so they groom themselves and naturally want to do their business outside.

These dogs have bright minds, which makes training and playtime fun.

Akitas require a fair amount of physical exercise and adore long walks. So expect to enjoy lots of nature hikes and fresh air with this loving canine.

Their long fluffy coat makes them look like a cross between a wolf and a teddy bear!

The Akita's double coat protects them from cold weather and harsh elements, keeping them warm however chilly it gets. They then shed heavily in the Spring to prepare for the warmer months.

Meet the Akita

The Akita is the largest of seven native Japanese dog breeds, and the American version is larger and more heavily boned than the original. They can weigh anywhere between a hefty 36 and 66 kg and stand 60 to 71 cm tall.

These wolf-like large dogs are noticeably muscular with a sturdy body frame and long, robust bones. One key trait of this breed is its large, well-feathered tail, which is set high and often curls over its back.

The Akita's legs are strongly muscled, while their chest is deep and broad with well-sprung ribs. But one physical characteristic you may find surprising about these strong canines is their elegant cat-like feet.

Both the Akita's body and head are large, the latter of which is a blunt triangular shape. They have a broad and deep muzzle, small, deep-set dark brown eyes, and naturally erect ears.

Still, the most distinctive characteristic of this breed is its coat. The Akita's fur is a double coat with a thick, short undercoat and a harsh outer coat. The hair on their head, ears, and lower legs is noticeably shorter than the rest of their body, though.

You can find various colours and patterns on an American Akita, including Brindle, Red, Fawn, White, and Pinto. All of these except white can and often do have a black mask over the nose and muzzle, another defining feature of this breed.

The temperament of an Akita

As Akitas have a background as guard dogs, they possess outstanding protective qualities, becoming utterly devoted and loyal to their family, who they will look out for as long as they live.

This makes them a fab choice if you seek a watch or guard dog. They are naturally wary of strangers, so if someone is hanging around who shouldn't be, you will soon know about it. Their warnings are also reliable as they only tend to bark if there is a reason to do so.

Along with this serious side, Akitas can be pretty playful and silly, which makes them a lovely fit for homes with children. They also possess cat-like qualities, as Akita owners often comment on how they groom themselves and their owners.

Because of their fighting background, these dogs can sometimes try to fight other dogs they do not know, so keeping them leashed when out and about is essential. Because of their strength and their instincts, it is necessary to establish a regular training regime from puppyhood.

Training and socialisation will also help them manage their reaction to strangers and curb their high protective instincts.

Best homes for an Akita

The Akita's protective instincts make them very territorial, so unfortunately, this breed is not a good fit for multi-dog homes. They prefer to be the only pet, and as they can have strong hunting instincts, they should not share a home with small animals, including cats.

Akitas generally adore being around children, but because of their size and strength, they are better for older kids than babies or toddlers. Moreover, you should still supervise interactions between dog and child, especially when you bring them home, because Akitas may be wary of the child at first.

FAQs about the Akita (American)

We are constantly vigilant to ensure we only associate ourselves with licensed, ethical American Akita breeders who run private operations rather than commercial breeding programs.

We're happy to say that all Pedigree Paws breeders meet the high standards set by the top breeding associations and us. They also raise their puppies in their own homes, allowing them to get familiar with this environment from the get-go and socialise with humans, something vital for this breed.

We also take the health of each Akita puppy exceptionally seriously and run DNA health checks to ensure they are not carrying any genetic diseases. Plus, we work with Britain's most reputable and veterinarian-approved pet travel company. Should you live too far from the breeder to pick up your new pup, we can ensure they arrive to you safely.

Akitas are incredibly protective and loyal canines, but they require regular training and socialisation and need an owner who can make them realise they are not the leader. For this reason, this is not the best pet for you if you have no previous experience with dogs.

However, if you've had many dogs in the past, you will surely enjoy an excellent relationship with an Akita. But note that these dogs prefer being solo pets and don't get on too well with other dogs.

Moreover, their hunting instincts make Akitas unsuitable for homes with small pets, including cats. Their size and strength also make them a bad fit for homes with babies, but they do great with older kids.

While we hope the world will be free from unethical dog breeding someday, we know it is not the reality right now. Still, we are passionate about doing what we can to change that, so we play our part by working only with private, licensed breeders who run ethical operations. Before a breeder starts working with us, they must show they have significant experience with American Akitas and prove they ethically raise their puppies in their family homes.

Although Akitas are hardy canines, they have a few breed-specific health concerns, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Autoimmune Thyroiditis. We do several things to reduce the likelihood of your new puppy developing a disease like this. This includes a full medical check-up, a DNA health test to check for genetic issues, and their core vaccinations. For further peace of mind, we will also provide five weeks of health insurance.

Akita puppies must stay with their mother until they have finished weaning and appear physically and emotionally independent. Most puppies reach this stage between ten and twelve weeks old, but as puppies develop at different rates, this can vary.

If the Akita puppy you're interested in is not yet available, the breeder will provide an expected "ready date" and then keep you updated on its development.

We understand that choosing a new four-legged companion can be stressful. You want to be 100% sure that your new Akita puppy is healthy, friendly and comes from a good environment.

The best way to ensure you're getting a healthy puppy is to meet the pup and its parents before purchasing. If you live too far from the breeder to do this in person, we will provide photos of the puppy and its parents as an alternative. Alternatively, you can set up a call with the breeder.

Yes, of course. All our breeders register their Akita puppies with the relevant breeding organisation, such as The Kennel Club. This proves they meet the breed standard and are free from the association's list of genetic diseases. The breeder will complete the registration, obtain the documents before the sale, and send you the certificate along with your new Akita pup.

100%. We can say with total confidence that our Akita puppies come from a loving and ethical environment that is safe and clean. This is thanks to the various checks we carry out on each breeder and the fact that all puppies are raised in real homes.

Rest assured that our breeders are licensed and registered with the relevant breeding organisation. We are not associated with any commercially-run breeding operations.

All Akita puppies from The Pedigree Paws spend the first two to three months of their life with their mama and siblings in the breeder's home. They only part from the mother dog when they are fully weaned and showing signs they are physically, mentally, and emotionally independent.

Akita dogs are naturally wary of new people, so don't be surprised if it takes some time for your new puppy to warm up to you. Here are some tips and tricks you can try to help speed up the process.

● Upon arrival, keep them in a small quiet room for the first few hours to decompress.
● Minimise the number of new people they meet in the first one to two days.
● For the first week, ensure your new pup has a cosy, safe corner somewhere they can retreat to whenever they feel scared or overwhelmed. This place should be semi-covered and free from constant activity and loud noises.
