Breed traits and characteristics

Bred to be an all-round hunting dog, the American Water Spaniel is a high-energy breed born to chase and retrieve. They are skilled swimmers and will gaily retrieve items from the water because they are protected by their water-resistant double coats. The American Water Spaniel or AWS can also make an excellent canine companion for the right owner.

These dogs are rare, and not well-known outside the Great Lakes area of the US. However, they have the personality and traits that make them worth everyone’s consideration, especially those who love the outdoors and live near the water.

American Water Spaniels are muscular medium-sized dogs full of enthusiasm and energy. Similar to other hunting dogs, they require continuous physical and mental stimulation. So, they need a family that can provide enough time to go out and play fetch and other outdoor activities on a daily basis.

If properly introduced and trained from a young age, American Water Spaniels can learn to become friendly with strangers. However, they are generally known to be a bit aloof with people they don’t know. These canines can make excellent watchdogs and will alert you with a warning bark if they hear any strange or unfamiliar noises.

Meet the American Water Spaniel

As part of the Spaniel family, these dogs are medium-sized, weighing between 11 and 20 kg and standing 38 to 46 cm tall. Their bodies are compact, with well-boned legs and long, slightly curved feathered tails.

A unique characteristic of this dog is its well-padded, webbed feet, with toes positioned closely together to enable them to swim faster and longer.

The American Water Spaniel’s medium-sized head has a moderately long muzzle and significantly long, wide ears that droop down and are covered in tight curls. Their dark coloured nose boasts impressive scent power, which enables them to sniff out prey from miles away.

Another key physical trait of the American Water Spaniel is its curly double coat. How curly their fur is will depend on the dog, as their coat can range from loose waves to tight ringlets. Moreover, the hair on their neck, throat, and rear area tends to be longer than the rest of their body, and their tails are super fluffy.

The American Water Spaniel’s fur is water-resistant and thick enough to protect its skin from sharp objects like twigs they may encounter while hunting. This breed has three possible coat colours: brown, liver, and chocolate, and white patches on the toes and chest may or may not be present.

The temperament of an American Water Spaniel

With a history of working closely with humans, American Water Spaniels are an obedient breed who are always alert and ready to do whatever job you may give them. They have an amiable nature and enjoy being in the company of their humans, but they can be a little aloof with strangers.

As they develop strong bonds with their owners, they can get bored and lonely quickly, and separation anxiety is common with this breed. Thus, American water Spaniels do best with people who can give them plenty of attention, affection, and time. Also note that these dogs have a natural tendency to chew, dig, and jump, which can become a problem if left alone often.

American Water Spaniels are also lively and high-energy, so they do well with active families who enjoy the outdoors. They need frequent exercise and playtime and have the stamina (and desire) for long walks and off-leash running. Moreover, as they are used to an outdoor environment, these dogs usually don’t like spending the whole day indoors, so having access to an enclosed garden will help an American Water Spaniel thrive.

Note that these dogs can bark a fair amount; they become vocal at unfamiliar sights and sounds and when excited, bored, or even hungry. So while you can use this canine as a watchdog, remember that their barking can be somewhat unreliable.

Best homes for an American Water Spaniel

American Water Spaniels make lovely pets for families with children as they match their high energy and will serve as excellent playmates. They are also tolerant and patient dogs, but you should still observe all interactions and teach the child how to appropriately approach and interact with the dog.

These canines also thrive with active, outdoor-loving people. If you regularly go swimming and running and are happy to bring this pup along, they will feel like they have won the jackpot!

Finally, while American Water Spaniels are not the friendliest around unfamiliar dogs, they can live in harmony with other canines if they grow up around them.

FAQs about the American Water Spaniel

We strive to ensure we only associate ourselves with licensed and experienced American Water Spaniel breeders.

All our breeders run private operations rather than commercial breeding programs and demonstrate strong ethics and passion for dog breeding. They also raise their puppies in their family homes, which we believe is the only ethical environment for breeding dogs. This way, they will already be familiar with family environments when they come to you and will have had some socialisation with humans.

We also take the health of each American Water Spaniel puppy exceptionally seriously by running DNA health checks to ensure they do not carry any genetic diseases. Plus, we work with Britain's most reputable pet travel company, approved by veterinarians. So, should you live too far from the breeder to pick up your new puppy yourself, we can ensure a safe and stress-free trip for them.

The American Water Spaniel is an affectionate, loyal, and obedient breed, making them an all-around top choice for dog lovers. However, as they have active bodies and minds, they can and often do get bored quickly and don't do well when left alone for too long.

Therefore, they are the best fit for people who are home often and have lots of time for them. They also serve as excellent playmates for children of all ages and are very tolerant and patient with them.

While we hope that someday dishonourable dog breeding will be a thing of the past, we know that it is not the reality right now. Still, we are passionate about doing our bit to change that, which is why we only work with private, licensed breeders who run ethical operations. Before a breeder starts working with us, they must show they have significant experience with dog breeding and know this breed well. They must also prove they ethically raise their puppies in their family homes.

American Water Spaniels are generally healthy canines, but like most dog breeds, they have a few breed-specific health concerns. To ensure your pup has a good chance of living a long and healthy life, they receive a full medical check-up, a DNA health test to check for genetic issues, and their core vaccinations before coming to you. We also provide five weeks of health insurance for each puppy for further peace of mind.

American Water Spaniels must stay with their mother until they have finished weaning (naturally) and appear independent in all aspects. Most puppies reach this stage between ten and twelve weeks old; still, every puppy develops at its own rate, so this, of course, can vary.

If the American Water Spaniel puppy you're interested in is not yet ready, the breeder will provide an expected date and keep you updated on its development until then.

We know choosing a new four-legged companion can be stressful. You want to be completely sure that your new Spaniel puppy and its parents are healthy and friendly.

The best way to ensure this is to meet the pup and its parents beforehand. But don't worry if you live too far from the breeder to do this in person. We will provide photos of the puppy and its parents as an alternative, and you also have the option to set up a call with the breeder.

Yes, our breeders register their American Water Spaniel puppies with the relevant breeding organisation as soon as possible after birth. This registration proves they meet the breed standard and do not carry any of the common genetic diseases. The breeder will complete the registration and obtain the documents before sending you the certificate along with your new pup.

100%. All our American Water Spaniel puppies come from a safe and ethical environment where they receive all the love and care they need. We can ensure this as we carry out various checks on each breeder both before they start working with us and during the working relationship.

Also note that our breeders are licensed, registered with the relevant breeding organisation and operate from their own homes. We are not associated with any commercially-run breeding operations.

All American Water Spaniel puppies from The Pedigree Paws spend the first two to three months with their mama and littermates in the safest environment possible - the breeder's home. They only part from the mother dog when they are fully weaned and showing signs that they are independent and ready for their next life stage.

American Water Spaniel dogs can be naturally wary of new people, so it may take some time for your new puppy to warm up to you. However, you can try some tips and tricks to help speed up the process.

● When your pup arrives, contain them in a small quiet room for at least the first few hours to decompress. You can usually gauge when the puppy feels more comfortable and ready to explore.
● Minimise the number of new people they meet in the first one to two days to avoid overwhelming them with strangers.
● For the first week (or until fully settled), provide a cosy, safe space for the puppy to retreat whenever they feel scared or overwhelmed.
