Breed traits and characteristics

Australian Terriers are lively, intelligent, and fun-loving. They are also surprisingly robust, despite their small size. Being true “terriers” by nature, Australian Terriers are highly adaptable and thrive in a family environment.

Developed in Australia, the Australian Terrier was originally bred to hunt snakes and rodents. Today, they are highly prized as canine companions and watchdogs. These active little dogs first arrived in the UK back in the 19th century and were recognised by the Kennel Club in 1933.

These canines remained popular in their native country as working dogs on rural farms and as beloved family pets. Nowadays, these beautiful dogs are loved the world over for their delightful characters, eagerness to please, and innate love for life!

Australian Terriers do well in both apartments and large houses as long as they get all the mental and physical stimulation they need to remain happy. Australian Terriers generally get along well with both children and other pets.

10 reasons to add a Australian Terrier to your family

Aussie Terriers have a fun-loving nature and are always clowning around. They will make you laugh and turn the most mundane day into a bright, hilarious one.

Because of their high energy and playfulness, these small pups are often a delight for children. This dog will task itself to keep your kid entertained on weekends and school holidays.

As they bark at unfamiliar sounds and sights, Aussie Terriers will alert you to potential problems. However, train them to ensure they don't bark at unnecessary things.

Despite having long hair, the Aussie Terrier is a minimal shedder and easy to groom. Brushing them once or twice a week is usually enough.

Due to their small size and weight, Aussie Terriers don't require much space. As long as they get plenty of exercise and daily walks, they can thrive living in a flat or apartment.

Although they don't have the same smooth and straight hair as their cousin, the Aussie Terrier's dishevelled appearance is equally charming!

These dogs are fast learners who can quickly understand and execute the tasks or actions you desire. Whether you need them to retrieve the remote or leap through a hoop, this pup is always ready to please.

Bred for harsh weather; these dogs used to work in various temperatures and conditions, meaning they withstand freezing winters and hot summers.

This canine needs a lot of physical stimulation, so they will get you off the couch whether you like it or not.

While they are an Australian breed, it's believed Aussie Terriers descend from a relative of the old Scotch dog of Great Britain.

Meet the Australian Terrier

The Australian Terrier is the smallest working dog in the Terrier group, but they are larger than their cousins, the Silkies. They typically weigh between 5 and 7 kg and stand 25 to 27 cm tall.

The Aussie Terrier's body is robust, giving them a sturdy and powerful look. Holding them up are straight front legs and muscular back legs powered by their broad hindquarters. Their head is long and wide with a powerful long muzzle and small dark eyes set well apart on the head. Their ears are also small and usually held erect with pointed tips.

The most significant difference between both Aussie breeds is their coat. Unlike the Silkies, who have lush, smooth hair, Australian Terriers have a rough double coat. This comprises a coarse, harsh topcoat and a softer, shorter undercoat.

Their fur is roughly 2 ½ inches long, and the breed is known for its very defined ruff around their necks. These terriers also have shorter hair on their lower legs, feet, and muzzles compared to the rest of their body.

Australian Terriers can come in various colours; blue and tan, solid red or solid sandy, and the less common, steel blue and tan.

The temperament of an Australian Terrier

Australian Terriers may be among the smallest working dog breeds, but they are also one of the most hardworking. Their petite size does not lessen their energy, enthusiasm or loyalty one bit, making this dog one who is always raring to go and eager to please.

Having such a high-spirited nature, this dog will change the whole ambience of a home. They will infuse it with laughter and energy and most likely keep every family member on their toes.

Aside from being hardworking and entertaining, Australian Terriers are extremely people-oriented when it comes to their families. They like to be close to their owners at all times and are known to read and copy their human's moods.

These little pups are also surprisingly confident and courageous, so they will happily take the watchdog role. However, they are also known to bark excessively, so they are not the most reliable guard. While they can be yappy, these Terriers are not typically aggressive towards people, including children, making them a good fit for families.

However, as this breed can pick up various unwanted traits like digging and chasing, training is essential from an early age. Luckily, training is not too challenging because they are intelligent and willing to learn. Still, as they can be stubborn, opt for reward-based training methods to keep their attention and cooperation.

Best homes for an Australian Terrier

While Australian Terriers can do well with children, note that they don't appreciate or accept rough handling. So it is essential always to supervise interactions between dog and child and teach the kids how to behave towards them.

As terriers, naturally, these dogs can be wary or even aggressive towards other dogs. However, with training and early socialisation, they often learn to accept and live harmoniously with another canine.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case with cats, though. Because of their hunting instincts, Aussie Terriers will chase any small animal they see, including cats. Therefore, along with not introducing them to a feline, it's essential to dog-proof your garden so they cannot get out and chase the neighbour's kitty!

FAQs about the Australian Terrier

Here at Pedigree Paws, we pride ourselves on our high standards for the Australian Terrier breeders we work with. All of our breeders are licensed and experienced, and they operate privately with ethical breeding practices. We do not associate with any commercial breeding programs.

Our breeders are committed to raising their puppies in a nurturing home environment instead of using cages. This ensures that the puppies are safe and well-cared for.

Our top priority is the health and well-being of every Australian Terrier puppy on our platform. To ensure this, we conduct DNA health checks to detect genetic diseases, provide five weeks of health insurance for each puppy, and partner with a reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel company to safely deliver your new puppy to you.

Australian Terriers are intelligent, funny, affectionate, and playful. This small dog and its huge personality will undoubtedly bring endless joy into your home and life and is excellent with children, providing interactions are supervised.

However, because of their hunting instincts, they are not recommended for homes with small animals, including cats. They can get on well with other dogs if they receive early socialisation, though it is best to introduce them to a canine of the opposite sex.

Because Aussie Terriers don't require much space, they can live well in apartments and flats. However, the most important thing to note about this breed is that they need plenty of exercise. Two one-hour play sessions or walking time is recommended each day. For this reason, they do best with owners who like to be active and are home often.

We pursue our objective of ending unethical dog breeding by exclusively collaborating with licensed private breeders who run their businesses ethically from their homes. Our rigorous screening process and security checks guarantee that our partnered breeders meet our exceptionally high standards of experience and dedication.

Australian Terrier dogs are highly resilient to extreme weather conditions and can live for an average of 11 to 15 years. However, every dog breed may experience genetic health issues. That's why we offer various measures to ensure the optimal health of your new pup. These include:

● A comprehensive medical check-up by a licensed veterinarian
● A DNA health test for early detection of genetic medical issues
● Core vaccinations
● Five weeks of health insurance coverage

To ensure the proper development of Australian Terrier puppies, it's important for them to stay with their mother until they are naturally weaned and exhibit emotional and physical independence. Generally, these puppies can be adopted into permanent homes when they reach ten to twelve weeks old, depending on the individual puppy.

If the specific puppy you're interested in isn't currently available, you can reach out to the breeder to inquire about the expected availability date.

In your search for a new puppy, it's understandable to have concerns about finding a trustworthy source. To alleviate doubts and ensure a wise decision, we recommend a face-to-face meeting with the puppy and its parents before purchasing. If this isn't feasible, we can offer pictures or arrange a video call with the breeder to provide additional reassurance.

When you purchase an Australian Terrier puppy from The Pedigree Paws, you can rest assured that our breeders have registered them with the appropriate pedigree organization in the UK. This registration is necessary to ensure the puppy conforms to breed standards and has no genetic diseases. The breeder will provide you with the original certificate along with your new puppy.

We raise our Australian Terrier puppies in a safe and ethical environment - the breeder's family home. They are provided with proper medical care and receive lots of love and socialization from the moment they are born. We carefully screen and randomly inspect the breeders we work with to ensure the highest quality. It's important to note that we only work with licensed breeding facilities and not commercially-run ones.

At Pedigree Paws, all puppies are raised in the breeder's family home with their mother and littermates until they are ready for their new homes. The breeder has a strict policy of not separating any puppy from its mother until it is fully weaned and capable of independent living. This approach guarantees the safety and ethical breeding of your new pup.

Upon welcoming your new Australian Terrier into your home, you can follow these steps to help them settle in comfortably.

● To begin with, provide a calm and serene environment for your Aussie Terrier in a small space, particularly during the first few hours after they arrive. This will enable them to relax and unwind after being separated from their mother and making the journey to your home.
● During the initial one to two days, it is best to limit the number of new individuals your puppy interacts with to prevent them from becoming overwhelmed by too many unfamiliar faces at once.
● Create a secure and pleasant area for your pup in a quiet section of your home where they can retreat if they feel frightened or overwhelmed. This space should function as their sanctuary for at least the first week or until they become more self-assured and at ease in their new environment.
