Breed traits and characteristics

Originating from the Sahel region of the Sahara Desert, the Azawakh is an elegant and proud guardian, canine companion, and hunter. They are named after the Azawakh valley in the Sahara.

Known to be affectionate and gentle, Azawakhs are also protective of their families and properties. They are known to be aloof and standoffish toward people they don’t know and dislike being touched or petted by strangers. Breed enthusiasts portray them as a fascinating combination of independence and loyalty.

Azawakhs are sighthounds so they are attracted by motion and inclined to run after animals, people on skateboards, and bicycles. They have even been known to run after kids. For this reason, the muscular and lean Azawakhs can be excellent companions for runners and joggers. At home, they like to find a nice spot to relax and snooze.

These independent dogs are best suited to homes with secure, large-fenced gardens where they can freely run around and let off some energy. Azawakhs need at least an hour of daily exercise or play. Keep in mind that they can get cold easily because of their short hair and low body fat. So, you may need to cover them in a sweater before going outdoors during the winter season.

10 reasons to add a Azawakh to your family

One great thing about Azawakhs is that they tire out quickly. They are sprinters rather than marathon runners and are happy to spend most of their time lazing indoors.

Fiercely loyal and protective, whether you've just moved to a high-crime area or are worried about burglaries, this dog will ensure no harm comes to you.

Azawakhs have short fur that rarely needs maintenance. A quick rub down with a chamois cloth once a week is plenty to keep their coat smooth and shiny.

Azawakhs can reach speeds of 65 km/h (40 mph), so they are perfect if you're looking for a workout or running buddy.

While they may not be soft and cuddly, these canines certainly have an endearing elegance and suppleness about them.

These pups can get pretty chilly in wintertime. Therefore, you'll need to buy them cute and cosy clothes, such as sweaters, booties, and pyjamas.

Azawakhs are pack oriented and, in the wild, form complex social hierarchies. They can recognise each other after long periods of separation, so you don't have to worry about your four-legged friend forgetting who you are when you return from a holiday.

In the wild, Azawakhs are often found sleeping on top of each other for warmth and companionship. They will try to recreate this with you by sleeping by your feet, under your arm, or even on your lap.

Bred in harsh weather conditions, this dog can withstand a lot. As a result, they do not have many breed-specific health concerns and can live for up to 15 years.

Azawakhs received recognition from the UK Kennel Club in 1993 but were not recognised by the American Kennel Club until 2019. And still today, you don't see many of these canines around.

Meet the Azawakh

While they have a big body frame, Azawachs are very slender. Thus, they are not as hefty as some other large breeds. They typically weigh between 15 and 25 kg and stand 64 to 74 cm tall.

The Azawakh's appearance resembles a Greyhound with long legs holding a graceful, slender body and their muscles and bone structure showing through their skin. They have lean shoulders, lung skulls, and triangular ears set high on their heads, which are usually relaxed. Their almond-shaped eyes are typically brown or amber-coloured.

Like Greyhounds, Azawakh dogs have very short coats with minimal hair on their bellies. This short coat is smooth and can come in many colours, including dark red, brindle, dark fawn, and sand. Some also have a black mask or white blaze.

As you may expect, Azawakhs have very minimal grooming needs. Because of their short hair, it is best to rub them down with a chamois or a firm bristle brush rather than use a standard dog brush. A quick weekly brush is sufficient.

The temperament of an Azawakh

As they were bred to be guardians, Azawakhs are among the top choices if you seek a dog for personal protection. Their loyalty and eagerness to keep you safe means they will never let any harm come to you.

Although protective, this breed may appear distant to those they don't know. Their response may vary depending on their personality. Nonetheless, early socialisation is crucial to control their behaviour. Introducing them to diverse groups of individuals, including children and seniors, is recommended to help them remain calm when meeting new people.

Another thing to note about this breed is their high prey drive. They have strong hunting instincts and can run extremely fast, meaning they will usually catch their prey. Even if you don't have small animals in your home (which we don't recommend), you should still work on controlling these instincts in training. That way, if they see something while out walking, they won't dash off in a split second as soon as they see something interesting. Work on creating a solid recall with this dog and keep them leased when out walking.

As Azawakhs have an independent streak, they can be quite strong-willed and, thus, are best suited to experienced dog owners who can successfully train them to listen to them. They are naturally intelligent, so you can develop a good and effective training schedule by using positive reinforcement methods rather than harsh training systems.

Best homes for an Azawakh

Azawakhs thrive with experienced owners who are home often (as these dogs worry if their owners are away for too long). They may also not be the best fit for families with young children as they can sometimes be aloof.

They do well in multi-dog households, so it's a good idea to get them a canine friend. However, note that Azawakhs can try to take the role of the dominant dog, so some training will likely be required. They can get along with cats if brought up together and socialised from an early age. However, you should not introduce a new cat to an adult Azawakh, especially if it's not well-socialised.

As they are used to a nomadic life, Azawachs are pretty adaptable. However, the breed was developed in a desert environment, so Azawakhs are made for hot weather. They will be fine during heat waves, but they can struggle to stay warm in the winter. To give your Azawach thin coat an extra layer of warmth, you can get them a warm dog coat, sweater, or even a cosy pair of pyjamas.

FAQs about the Azawakh

At Pedigree Paws, we hold ourselves to high standards regarding the breeders we work with. All our Azawakh breeders are licensed, experienced, and operate with ethical breeding practices. We only work with private breeders and do not associate with commercial breeding programs.

Our breeders are devoted to raising puppies in a nurturing home environment rather than in cages. This means that every puppy is well-cared for and safe.

Our top priority is the health and well-being of every Azawakh puppy. We conduct DNA health checks to detect genetic diseases, provide five weeks of health insurance for each puppy, and partner with a reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel company to ensure the safe delivery of your new puppy.

Azawakhs are loyal and affectionate towards their owners but can be aloof and standoffish toward people they don’t know. So if you’re looking for a social butterfly type of dog, this is not the best breed for you.

These canines, however, are an excellent fit for families with older children thanks to their patient and tolerable nature. However, the most important thing they need is someone who is home often as they don’t like to be left alone for long. Moreover, because they have a relatively independent streak, they can be pretty stubborn and, thus, are best suited to people with previous experience with dogs.

Our big goal at The Pedigree Paws is to put an end to unethical dog breeding. To work towards achieving this, we only work with licensed private breeders who operate their businesses ethically from their homes. We also thoroughly screen and conduct security checks on each breeder to ensure they meet our high standards of experience and dedication.

Azawakh dogs typically live for 12 to 15 years, but due to their limited gene pool, they are prone to specific health issues. However, we take your pup's health seriously and offer several measures to ensure optimal well-being. These include a thorough medical exam by a licensed vet, DNA testing to detect genetic medical issues early, essential vaccinations, and five weeks of health insurance coverage.

For the healthy growth and development of Azawakh puppies, it's crucial that they remain with their mother until they are naturally weaned and show signs of emotional and physical independence. Typically, these puppies are ready for their permanent homes between ten and twelve weeks old, depending on their individual progress.

In case the puppy you're interested in is not currently available, you can contact the breeder to inquire about the anticipated availability date.

When searching for a new furry friend, it's important to take the necessary precautions to ensure they come from a trustworthy source. We highly recommend meeting both the puppy and its parents in person before finalising any purchases. If that's not feasible, we are more than happy to provide you with photos or facilitate a video call with the breeder to give you added reassurance.

Yes, if you buy an Azawakh puppy from The Pedigree Paws, you can be confident that our breeders have registered them with the proper pedigree organisation in the UK. This registration is crucial to guarantee that the puppy meets breed standards and is free of genetic ailments. The breeder will give you the original certificate along with your new puppy.

Rest assured that our Azawakh puppies are raised in the best possible environment - the breeder's family home. We leave no stone unturned in providing them with proper medical care, love, and socialisation right from birth. To ensure we maintain the highest standards, we meticulously screen and randomly inspect the breeders we collaborate with. It's important to note that we only work with licensed breeding facilities, not commercially-run ones.

At Pedigree Paws, every puppy is raised in the breeder's family home with their mother and littermates until they are ready for their forever home. The breeder firmly adheres to a policy of never separating a puppy from its mother until it is fully weaned and capable of living independently. This guarantees the safety and ethical breeding of your new four-legged friend.

When you bring your new Azawakh pup home, making them feel comfortable and at ease is essential. One way to do this is by creating a peaceful and quiet spot for them, especially during the first few hours after they arrive. This will help them relax after leaving their mama and travelling to their new home.

Then, during the first couple of days, it's best to limit the number of new people your pup meets so they don't feel overwhelmed. It's also a good idea to provide your pup with a cosy and secure space in a quiet part of the house where they can go if they feel scared or anxious. This spot should be their safe haven for at least the first week or until they feel more confident and relaxed in their new environment.
