Breed traits and characteristics

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV) is a small scent hound that has won the hearts of many dog lovers. They are most popular in their native France; however, they are still fairly rare in America and the UK. Although this dog breed appears to have been designed for winsome cuteness, in actuality, PBGVs are tough hunters developed for a specific purpose: to hunt small game in the rough terrain of the Vendeen region of France. The breed is known for its merry and outgoing personality.

Adaptable and affectionate, these pups can do well in apartment living situations. However, they have fairly high energy levels, so they need plenty of exercise. PBGVs can also have a stubborn streak but consistent training with lots of positive reinforcement can help with this. If you can provide this pooch with lots of physical activity and care, you’ll be rewarded with a loving companion for the whole family.

With his low-slung body, longish back, bearded face, wiry coat, and a merry, ready-for-anything attitude, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen — PBGV to his friends — looks and acts like a composite of several hound breeds: a dash of Dachshund, a bit of Beagle, and a smidgen of Basset Hound. But the PBGV is an old breed and a distinctive one; a French scent hound built to move nimbly through heavy, thorny underbrush in pursuit of rabbits. This breed has many good qualities, but they are not right for everyone.

The lively PBGV is an outgoing, active dog breed that is always into everything. They are curious about their surroundings and love to dig and bark. In fact, the breed standard states that they have a good voice, freely and purposefully used. Chasing squirrels, rabbits, and other furry prey is a favorite occupation of this hunting hound. So, they are not best suited to homes with small animals. PBGVs make active and cheerful playmates for kids, although they are probably too rambunctious for toddlers.

10 reasons to add a Basset Griffon Vendeen Petit to your family

Known as a happy breed; the PBGV makes it its mission to bring joy to your day and a smile to your face. So if times have been a little dark lately and you're looking for a pick-me-up, this is it.

The PBGV is a great companion for snuggling due to its shaggy coat, floppy ears, and charming personality.

While PBGVs crave and need human interaction, this breed's independent streak means they can and do find their own entertainment when their humans are busy.

The PBGV's distinctive long eyebrows, bushy beard, and prominent moustache are among this breed's most favoured appearance traits.

This extroverted dog loves to meet new people and adores making their humans laugh through their playful antics.

As pack animals, PBGVs prefer to have company, whether from a human or canine. They form strong bonds with the people they live with and see them as nothing less than family, even if you do have two legs!

Surprisingly, you don't have to spend multiple hours a day trying to keep this fluffy pup tangle-free. Brushing their wiry coats once or twice a week is enough, and trips to the groomers are sporadic.

If you're looking for an excuse to exercise more or spend more time outdoors, a PBGV is ideal. These hounds love all sorts of games and activities, as well as nature hikes and leisurely park strolls.

PBGVs are known for their love for children and high tolerance towards them. Their playful and curious nature makes them an ideal companion for energetic kids.

Their high energy and love for interaction also means they often thrive in show competitions. In fact, a PGBV named Buddy recently won Best in Show at the 2023 Westminster Dog Show.

Meet the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

Despite what their name suggests, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or PBGV for short, is a medium-sized breed. They typically weigh between 14 and 18 kg and 33 to 38 cm. While side by side, the petits look noticeably smaller than the grands; the difference is not that huge; Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens weigh between 18 and 22 kg and stand 38 to 46 cm tall.

Like other hounds, the PBCV has a long body and short legs. However, its body length is less extreme than the basset hound. Despite sporting a shaggy, somewhat messy-looking coat, PBGVs have a regal and confident look about them, which is due to how they walk around with their heads (and often tails) held high.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens have muscular legs, especially their hindquarters, and large feet with firm, tight pads. Their heads are dome-shaped with a dark-coloured nose with wide nostrils and a square muzzle well-covered in long hair, forming a prominent moustache and beard.

The PBGV also possesses the standard Hound drop, oval ears, turning inwards slightly. Their large, oval-shaped eyes are also dark in colour, sitting below long, bushy eyebrows. Another bushy body part is the tail, which has a well-feathered and tapering style.

The PBGV's shaggy coat can be one of the following patterns: Grizzle and White, Lemon and White, Orange and White, Sable and White, and Tricolour.

Whatever the colour, the double coat will be moderately long, coarse, and lying flat on the body.

The temperament of a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is charming, playful, and curious. They have a very happy and lively personality, characteristics which have made them popular family pets.

While they share some of the same personality traits as the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, the PBGV is typically more extroverted. They love meeting new people, but their loyalty is reserved for their owners, who they show their appreciation through endless affection.

Still, one trait both hound breeds share is their stubbornness, which can become known during training sessions. This comes from their independent streak, so they must be trained by someone who knows and understands dogs, particularly this breed. While they can have a mind of their own, these dogs respond well to patient, consistent training methods.

Another thing to note about these dogs is their high energy levels. To them, life is just one big adventure, and if they are not able to fulfil their dream to play and explore, they will get bored quickly. Therefore, regular physical and mental stimulation through games, walks, training, and affection is a must for this breed.

Best homes for a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

Because of their friendly and playful nature, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens are an excellent fit for families with children. They mainly do well with older children with whom they can play outside in the garden and who have matching high energy. While these hounds are known to be loving and tolerable with kids, it's still best to supervise interactions.

In their working era, these hounds would live and hunt in packs. Thus, they are used to being around other dogs and adore canine company. As a result, they do splendidly in multi-dog households, especially if introduced from puppyhood.

However, like all hound breeds, the hunting instincts of the PBGV mean they are not a great fit for homes with small pets like rabbits and cats.

FAQs about the Basset Griffon Vendeen Petit

Here at The Pedigree Paws, we have the highest ethical standards for our Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen breeders. We pride ourselves on working exclusively with licensed and experienced breeders who share our values and prioritise the well-being of their puppies above all else. Our breeders raise their puppies in a warm, nurturing home environment, never in cramped cages or unsanitary conditions.

We know your new puppy is more than just a pet - they're a beloved family member. That's why we go above and beyond to ensure that each and every one of our puppies gets the best possible start in life. From the moment they're born, we're dedicated to providing them with the care and attention they need to thrive. So if you're looking for a loyal, loving companion that you can trust, look no further than Pedigree Paws.

Are you in search of a furry companion that is playful, entertaining, and cheerful? Look no further than the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen dog! These hounds are ideal for families with children, as they are friendly, tolerant, and eager to please.

Keep in mind that these dogs have high energy levels and, thus, require an owner who has ample time. Additionally, they can be stubborn during training, so it's best to have prior experience with dogs.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens get along well with other dogs and enjoy being part of a multi-dog household. However, due to their hunting instincts, you should avoid this breed if you have small animals at home.

At The Pedigree Paws, our primary objective is to put an end to the unethical practice of dog breeding. Our approach towards achieving this goal is to collaborate solely with licensed private breeders of Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, who are committed to upholding ethical standards in their breeding practices from the comfort of their homes.

Furthermore, we ensure that every breeder we associate with meets our stringent criteria for knowledge and dedication. We do this by conducting thorough background checks and security screenings.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen breed is generally healthy and can live long lives with proper care. However, as with any breed, there are some common health issues to be aware of, such as hip dysplasia and patellar luxation.

To ensure the health and well-being of your new furry friend, we offer a range of services that prioritise their care. This includes:

● A thorough medical examination by a licensed veterinarian
● DNA testing to detect any potential genetic medical issues early on
● All necessary vaccinations
● Five weeks of health insurance coverage

You can rest assured that we take your new pup's health seriously and will do everything possible to ensure they thrive in their new home.

To ensure the healthy growth and development of Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen puppies, we strictly require pups to stay with their mother until they finish weaning naturally. Typically, at around ten to twelve weeks of age, they are considered ready for their forever homes, depending on their individual progress, of course. If the puppy you want is not currently available, please get in touch with the breeder for updated information.

When embarking on the journey of finding a new furry friend, investing in a reputable and trustworthy breeder is crucial. One of the most effective ways to ensure this is by meeting with the breeder and seeing your potential Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen puppy and its parents.

However, we understand this may not always be feasible, so we're here to assist you in any way we can. Whether providing detailed photos or organising a video call with the breeder, we are committed to ensuring you feel confident and satisfied with your choice.

Here at The Pedigree Paws, we ensure all of our Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen puppies are properly registered with the relevant pedigree organisation in the UK. This process is of utmost importance, as it guarantees the breeder complies with the breed's established standards and the puppy is free from genetic disorders. When you bring your new furry friend home, the breeder will provide you with the original certificate, giving you peace of mind about your new companion's health and pedigree status.

Here at The Pedigree Paws, we prioritise the puppies' safety and happiness over commercial gain. We ensure their well-being through proper medical attention, love, and socialisation from birth. Our licensed private breeding partners also undergo thorough screening and random inspections to maintain the highest standards.

We are proud to say all our breeders raise their Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen puppies in their loving family home, alongside the mother dog and siblings. We adhere to a strict policy that prioritises the well-being of our puppies by ensuring they are not separated from their mother prematurely. This ethical breeding practice guarantees that your new furry companion will be safe, healthy, and ready to join your family when fully weaned.

Bringing a new puppy into your home can be an exciting experience, but it may also cause stress for your Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. Therefore, we have a few suggestions to help your furry friend adjust to their new environment.

Firstly, prepare a comfortable sleeping area in a quiet part of your home before your pup arrives. You can also add a hot water bottle under their bed to provide extra comfort.

When your new furry friend arrives, calmly introduce them to their surroundings while keeping them on a leash. If they appear uneasy or fearful, allow them to retreat to their designated safe space without pressure to play or interact with you.
