Breed traits and characteristics

The Belgian Shepherd Tervueren is considered to be the most elegant of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties, which also include the Malinois, the Laekenois, and the Groenendael. They are known to be athletic, intelligent, and versatile working dogs with plenty of stamina. This breed’s origin may have been as a pastoral dog, but today, they are also utilised for rescue work, police work, show ring competitions, obedience and agility courses, and as devoted canine companions. As a result, they are best suited to active families that have plenty of time to devote to their unique and intense needs.

These are medium-sized dogs that boast a long, rich fawn to russet mahogany coat covered in a blanket of black that gives them their striking appearance. Belgian Shepherd Tervueren dogs have the same muscular body and limitless energy that is associated with all Belgian Shepherd breeds.

Known to be smart and sensitive, these dogs thrive with plenty of physical and mental stimulation. If not given enough, especially in a home setting, they may invent their own games to alleviate boredom, potentially leading to the development of unruly or unwanted behaviours. Keep in mind that the Belgian Shepherd Tervueren does not like being left alone for long periods. So, they match best with families where someone is home for most of the day.

These handsome dogs combine the loyalty, love, and character of a companion dog, with the beauty and grace of a show dog and the intelligence and energy of a working dog. These canines are true all-rounders as long as they are appropriately trained and socialised by an experienced owner.

10 reasons to add a Belgian Shepherd (Tervueren) to your family

These smart pups have worked as sheep herders, rescue canines, and police dogs. They also excel in show-ring competitions, notably obedience and agility courses.

Tervurens are highly motivated dogs that love to be given a job.

Not only are these dogs eager to please, but because they are so bright, you can quickly train them to do minor household or garden tasks!

Belgian Tervurens love to hike and run alongside their humans. So if you enjoy getting fit and spending time outdoors, this will be a wonderful pet for you.

The courageous Tervuren has a highly protective instinct, so they will ensure no harm comes to you or your home.

Despite coming from a working background, Tervurens are highly people-oriented and love to hang out with the family and be involved in everything you do.

During World War 1, these dogs worked many roles, including delivering messages, assisting the Red Cross and ambulance workers, and, sometimes, even as light machine-gun cart dogs!

Terurens have a long lifespan of 12 to 14 years. As they were bred to be working dogs in the fields, they are generally healthy and do not have many predispositions to medical conditions.

The Teruren’s body contains a lot of strength and power. However, their facial structure, silky coat, and majestic black masks make them look more like an elegant, stylish pup than a working dog.

Despite their high confidence and courage, these dogs can be surprisingly sensitive and affectionate. They often surprise you by jumping on your lap for a cuddle or nuzzling your feet.

Meet The Belgian Shepherd Tervueren

Belgian Terurens are medium-sized dogs, standing between 56 and 66 cm tall. They have robust bodies, but their weight can range between 20 and 30 kg depending on their muscle density. Females are generally lighter than males.

Out of all the Belgian Shepherd varieties, Tervurens are the most handsome. Their bodies are muscular but elegant, and their heads are elongated and well-chiselled, making them model-material in the dog world.

The Teruren’s upper body is broad and nicely muscled, with a deep chest and well-sprung ribs. Their muscular back legs stand on large, thick feet with springy soles, allowing them to run at high speed on all types of terrain.

One distinct feature of the Tervuren’s face is its long muzzle that tapers gradually to its small black nose. Above its muzzle are its small almond-shaped eyes, which are dark brown with black rims.

Tervurens are one of the two long-haired Belgian Shepherd breeds with a long, straight double coat. The dog’s dense undercoat provides them warmth and protection from extreme weather, and they strategically have tufts around their ears to protect dirt and bacteria from getting inside.

The Belgian Tervuren’s coat is typically fawn with a black overlay and black extremities (usually the muzzle and ears). Generally, their hair is longer on their body than their head, but they often have a ruff of long fur around the neck and feathering on the legs and tail.

The temperament of a Belgian Shepherd Tervueren

Like all Belgian Shepherds, Tervurens are energetic and intelligent. These active dogs must always be doing something, ideally helping their owner somehow or running around the yard.

Therefore, their primary living need is getting plenty of exercise and interaction. Both physical and mental stimulation is a must, making these dogs wonderful canines for agility courses and flyball. They also adore long walks in the woods, challenging puzzles and interactive games.

Belgian Terurens are inside/outside dogs and do not do well living in a flat or apartment. They thrive in country homes with access to an enclosed garden and can spend lots of time in the great outdoors.

However, this is not a dog you can leave out in the garden while you go to work. Terurens desire frequent human companionship and suffer separation anxiety when left alone for too long.

These dogs are also highly confident and protective, so they are not afraid to protect their home or owners if needed. However, they are not aggressive for no reason and do not attack without cause.

Best homes for a Belgian Shepherd Tervueren

The best home for a Belgian Teruren is easily one with a garden where they can enjoy plenty of off-leash exercises. However, the garden must be securely fenced as these canines have the instinct to chase moving objects, including wildlife, neighbourhood cats and even cyclists.

In terms of an owner, Belgian Terurens need someone who is home often and has plenty of time for them. Ideally, these dogs need a minimum of one hour of daily activity broken up into two or three play sessions or short walks.

Belgian Tervurens do well with active, outdoorsy people or young families where the household has high energy. They can get along well with children, but training will be necessary due to their dominant behaviours and herding instinct.

Belgian Tervurens can also live harmoniously with other dogs if they grow up with them from puppyhood. However, as they can be wary or even aggressive towards unfamiliar dogs, introducing them to another canine as an adult can be challenging.

FAQs about the Belgian Shepherd (Tervueren)

At Pedigree Paws, we take pride in breeding Belgian Tervuren dogs to the highest ethical standards. We only partner with licensed and regulated breeders who possess extensive experience and share our values. Our breeders prioritise the well-being of both puppies and breeding dogs by raising them in a clean and spacious home environment.

We understand that your Tervuren is a cherished family member, not just a pet, and we go to great lengths to ensure each puppy gets the best possible start in life. Our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care and ethical breeding guarantees you and your new furry friend will have many years of happiness together.

Belgian Tervurens are active and intelligent canines that require a lot of daily exercise and consistent training. Their maintenance needs are fairly high, so they are not recommended for first-time dog owners. Instead, they thrive with active, outdoorsy people who have plenty of time to keep them physically and mentally stimulated and have experience with dog training.

Belgian Tervurens are loyal and highly protective, making them fantastic watch or guard dogs. They can live well with kids but require training to control their herding instinct and dominant behaviours. Introducing them to other dogs as a puppy is no problem, but some Belgian Tervurens struggle with meeting new dogs once fully grown.

Our mission at The Pedigree Paws is to eradicate unethical dog breeding practices in the UK and beyond. We work to achieve this by exclusively collaborating with reputable Belgian Tervuren breeders who raise their puppies in their homes rather than in commercial breeding facilities.

To ensure that our partners adhere to our strict standards, we have a rigorous screening process in place. This involves conducting extensive background checks and security screenings on all potential breeders before initiating a partnership and throughout our collaboration.

Belgian Tervurens are a hardy breed that can live for 12 to 14 years with proper care. While they have few health predispositions, they can be susceptible to a few conditions, like Hip Dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).

This is no concern, though, as we offer various health services to ensure every Tervuren puppy from The Pedigree Paws is in top health. These services include:

● A comprehensive medical exam and check-up by a licensed veterinarian
● A DNA test to check for genetic health issues specific to this breed
● Core vaccinations
● Five weeks of health insurance.

Our top priority is the health and happiness of our Belgian Tervuren puppies. For their well-being, we let them stay with their mother and wean naturally. Normally, our puppies are prepared to go to their forever homes when they are between ten and twelve weeks old, but this may vary based on their individual development. If the specific Tervuren puppy you are interested in is currently unavailable, please contact the breeder for further information.

Finding a trustworthy pet breeder can be a daunting task. Ideally, it's recommended to visit the breeder in person to meet the puppy and its parents. However, this may not always be possible. Don't worry; we can assist you. We can provide photos of your Tervuren puppy and arrange a video call with the breeder. Our main objective is to ensure you are fully satisfied and confident with your decision.

Our breeders at The Pedigree Paws ensure that all Belgian Tervuren puppies are registered with reputable pedigree organisations such as The Kennel Club. This registration is crucial as it demonstrates our breeders' commitment to preserving established breed standards and ensuring that the puppy has no hereditary diseases.

When you bring your new furry companion home, the breeder will give you the original registration papers, guaranteeing your pet's health and pedigree status.

At The Pedigree Paws, we offer only well-tempered and fully healthy Belgian Tervuren puppies. We collaborate only with licensed, experienced, and ethical breeders committed to raising their puppies in a caring and hygienic home environment. In addition, our breeders provide any medical care needed and socialise the puppies from birth, something crucial for this breed.

Our Belgian Tervuren puppies are raised in a loving family environment with their mother and siblings. Our expert breeders prioritise the health and happiness of the puppies and mother dogs by allowing them to stay together until the pups are fully weaned and independent. This is essential to ensure that each puppy grows up to be a healthy and well-behaved companion.

When welcoming a Belgian Tervuren into your home, be aware that they might initially feel a bit uneasy around you as this breed can be naturally wary of strangers. However, there are several ways to help them settle in quickly.

First, set up a cosy and tranquil sleeping space ahead of your pup's arrival. Ensure the room is warm, provide fresh water and food, and include a soft toy for playtime.

Proceed gradually and calmly when introducing your Belgian Tervuren to their new environment. It's best to keep them on a leash to establish leadership roles from the start.
