Breed traits and characteristics

Hailing from the Berne region of Switzerland, Bernese Mountain Dogs are highly prized as family pets and versatile working dogs. They are one of four Sennenhund-type breeds that can trace their ancestry back to Roman Mastiff dogs. All these breeds have distinct black and tan coats with white markings that represent the cross on the Swiss flag for many people. These striking, large dogs are known to be true gentle giants, especially around children. Moreover, they are known to be affectionate, loyal, and intelligent, which means they are relatively easy to train. These robust, hard-working dogs are also well suited to compete in a range of dog sports including tracking, obedience, herding, carting, and conformation competitions. They are generally known to be calm and agreeable dogs; however, you must ensure you have the time to devote to their exercise and mental stimulation needs for them to remain happy and content.

Bernese Mountain Dogs can be suitable for first-time dog owners but remember that these dogs get large! So, you must be willing to put the effort into consistent training and exercise. These dogs don’t like being cooped up in small spaces all day and they dislike being left alone for long periods. Moreover, they are known to shed and drool excessively. However, for the right owners who understand their unique needs, these beautiful dogs make wonderful, devoted, sweet-natured companions that will attract attention wherever they go.

With ample open space, regular grooming, and a consistent training routine, the Bernese Mountain Dog will show devotion, loyalty, and unconditional love to their owners.

10 reasons to add a Bernese Mountain Dog to your family

Don't let this dog's big size put you off. Berners are incredibly gentle, kind, and affectionate.

Berners like to take the role of the family protector in the home. They will watch out for danger, keep you company, and look for ways to assist you.

While these dogs do need daily exercise, the Berner's needs are manageable. With a daily walk and a few play sessions sprinkled here and there, they will happily laze around and snuggle on the couch for the rest of the day.

Berners are easy to train, so they can perform many tasks on the field, including herding cattle and pulling carts. They are also believed to possess the ability to multitask.

Berners can be wonderful watchdogs, but you don't have to worry about them attacking the postman as they are shy and aloof rather than harmful.

The Berner's soft, silky fur gives them a majestic aura and elegant look.

These Swiss dogs are designed for cold weather, so you don't have to worry about them getting a chill during the winter. They will be eager to head out on a walk, no matter the weather.

While Berners only come in one pattern, their flashy, tricolour coat and white "Swiss cross" set them apart from other breeds.

Several notable Bernese Mountain Dogs have successfully rescued people. For example, one named Nico saved two people from being swept out into the ocean in California, while another named Bella pulled her owner out of a burning house, saving his life.

A Berner always makes their presence known, not because of their size or bark but because of their eagerness. This dog wants to be involved in all family activities; all they ask is that you let them do so!

Meet the Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large breed, between 58 and 71 cm tall. They weigh between 32 and 52 kg, with females typically being at the lower end of the scale and males being towards the higher end.

Berners have a powerful, robust body coupled with thick, long fur, making them look larger than life. They are well-boned with broad chests, powerful loins and muscular hindquarters. Their medium-sized heads sit atop thick necks.

Berners have straight, long muzzles with black noses and almond-shaped eyes. They have triangular, floppy ears set high on their head, which they tend to raise slightly and hold forward when excited or alert.

The Berner's soft and silky coat and iconic tricolour patterning are among this breed's top attributes. Their thick coats feature medium-length hairs that are slightly wavy and with a natural sheen. Unfortunately, their coats shed excessively, especially in Spring and Autumn, so brushing them several times a week is essential.

The Bernese Mountain Dog's specific coat colouring consists of a jet-black back, sides, and thighs, with reddish markings around the eyes, cheeks, chest, and lower legs. Their muzzles, chests, and sometimes paws are white. Another iconic part of the Berner pattern is the striking white blaze going up the forehead between the eyebrows.

The temperament of a Bernese Mountain Dog

Berners are affectionate and intelligent canines that adore being around their owners and bring happiness and love into any home. They are patient, calm, and tolerant, making them a good fit for families with children.

Still, these gentle giants have relatively high energy levels and a playful streak, so they require plenty of exercise through walks, interactive play, and training sessions. Providing their daily exercise needs are met, Berners are happy to relax on the couch, making them a pretty easy dog to care for.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are highly protective of their families and will bark at unfamiliar people, making them excellent watchdogs. However, they are not aggressive; while Berners may act aloof to new people, they will become friendly once they realise the stranger is no fret. You can work on this shyness tendency by socialising your Berner with lots of people as puppies.

Besides being smart, Berners are eager to please their owners, making them easy dogs to train. Regular short and fun sessions are best, especially as a puppy, and remember to reward them for good behaviour.

Best homes for a Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs are highly trainable and eager to please, making them a good fit for many households, including novice dog owners. However, they will thrive with active owners taking them for frequent walks and making time to play and interact with them.

While they are large dogs, Berners are giant giants, and thus, they are a fab choice for families with children. That being said, they are better suited to older children as there is a risk they could accidentally squish a toddler or baby.

Early socialisation is important for this breed, both with people and other animals. Well-socialised Berners will accept and tolerate new dogs (and cats), provided they are introduced slowly.

FAQs about the Bernese Mountain Dog

At The Pedigree Paws, we take immense pride in our commitment to responsibly and ethically breed Bernese Mountain dogs. We achieve this by partnering exclusively with licensed, regulated, and experienced breeders who share our values. You can rest assured that each puppy is raised in a clean, loving home environment with the mother dog and littermates.

In addition, we take all necessary steps to ensure that each puppy gets the best possible start in life. This includes facilitating health checks and vaccinations before delivering them to you and providing five weeks of comprehensive health insurance coverage.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a loving, calm, and loyal canine that forms close bonds with their families and commits to protecting and caring for them. They are also super intelligent and eager to please, making them easy dogs to train and absolute joys to have around.

These gentle giants do well with children, but they are a better fit for older children than toddlers or babies due to their large size. They also do best with active people who are home often to give them the exercise, interaction, and company they need.

Our aim is to eliminate unethical dog breeding practices in the UK. We accomplish this by teaming up with trustworthy Bernese Mountain Dog breeders who raise their puppies in their own homes rather than in commercial breeding establishments.

To ensure that we uphold high standards, we conduct extensive screenings and security checks on all breeders before collaborating with them. You can have complete trust in our dedication to promoting ethical breeding practices for all dogs.

As the gene pool for the Bernese Mountain Dog breed is small, these dogs naturally have a short lifespan and are prone to several health conditions. For this reason, we take extra measures to maximise the chance of your new Berner pup living a happy and healthy life.

Our health services include:

● A full health exam by a licensed, approved vet
● DNA testing for genetic health problems
● Core vaccinations (their vaccine booklet will be provided)
● Five weeks of health insurance

The Pedigree Paws puts the health and happiness of all Bernese Mountain puppies and breeding dogs as our top priority. We enforce a strict policy that keeps the pups with their mother until they are naturally weaned, providing them with the best possible care.

Generally, our puppies are ready to go to their forever homes between ten to twelve weeks of age, but this timeline may differ based on their individual growth and development. If you are interested in a specific puppy, please reach out to our breeder for updates and an estimated availability date.

Looking for a reliable pet breeder can be overwhelming, especially if you can't physically visit them because of distance. However, you don't have to worry, as we are here to guide you through the entire process. We'll share numerous photographs of your Bernese Mountain pup and even arrange a video call with the breeder so you can make a well-informed choice.

Before sending Bernese Mountain puppies to their new homes, we ensure they are registered with the correct pedigree organisation. This is important to maintain breed standards and minimise inherited diseases. You can be confident that you will receive official registration papers for your new pet, serving as proof of their pedigree status.

Our expertise lies in offering healthy and obedient Bernese Mountain puppies. Our ethical breeders prioritise the puppies' well-being and provide proper medical care. The puppies stay with their mother until they are weaned and socialised with different people and animals, which prepares them for their new home and family.

We raise our Bernese Mountain Dog puppies in a loving home environment, where they reside with their mother and siblings. They stay together until the puppies can care for themselves and have been cleared by a veterinarian. This is important to guarantee that each Pedigree Paws puppy grows up to be a healthy, friendly, and well-adjusted companion.

When you bring your new Bernese Mountain Dog puppy home, it may appear anxious or scared. So to make them feel more comfortable, try these techniques.

Set up a cosy space in a warm, quiet, dark, and peaceful area, such as a bedroom. Here provide fresh water, yummy food, and a soft bed so your new Berner can decompress and gain its bearings without stress or overwhelm.

Then, instead of showing your Berner puppy their new environment all at once, introduce them to one room at a time. In addition, let them meet household members individually to avoid overwhelming them.
