Breed traits and characteristics

Bloodhounds, also known as “Sleuth Hounds” are large, distinct-looking dogs that are highly capable of tracking down prey across vast distances and even through water, thanks to their incredibly acute sense of smell. These devoted, noble canines were originally bred to hunt deer and wild boar across Europe since the Middle Ages. Even today, they are utilised by law enforcement and search and rescue teams. In fact, their scenting skills are so good that their “testimony” is recognised and admissible in a court of law. These charming dogs hunt together by scent known as Sagaces, from the root word “sagacious”, which refers to the qualities of sound judgment and keen discernment.

These gorgeous hounds are affectionate and gentle, but they are far from lazy! Bloodhounds can follow a scent trail for long distances, so they require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to remain happy. That said, they also enjoy lounging or napping on a sun porch with their favourite people. These dogs can make wonderful canine companions for motivated and active owners however, they do require specific care. For this reason, it’s essential that you understand the needs of these dogs before committing to adding one to your family.

While Bloodhounds may not be everyone’s cup of tea because of their distinctive hound odour, as well as their boundless endurance and energy, with the right family and the right training, these hounds can make sensitive, kind, and tolerant pets that get along with both children and other animals.

Meet the Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are a large breed, standing 58 to 69 cm tall and weighing 36 to 50 kg. They have robust bodies with noble facial expressions, perfectly displaying their idyllic balance between power and wisdom.

Bloodhounds have strong backs, powerful hindquarters, well-developed thighs, and thick necks. They have relatively large, long heads with distinct wrinkles and folds all over their faces, giving them a unique sad expression. The wrinkles are most apparent on the forehead and sides of the face, but they do not obstruct eyesight.

Another distinct facial feature of the Bloodhound is its long, drooping ears set low and extending past the chin. In addition, they possess large, black noses with open nostrils allowing them to pick up scents from afar and medium-sized eyes that are hazel to dark brown.

Bloodhounds have a short, weather-resistant coat that feels smooth and looks glossy. Their hair is made to resist the elements and keep them warm and dry, so you will notice how water literally runs off their body. Thus, taking them for a walk in the rain is no problem at all!

The Bloodhound's coat can be one of three colours; black and tan, liver and tan or red. Those with a darker colouring may have lighter "peppering" that appears as white specks on parts of their body.

The temperament of a Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are active, intelligent dogs, so they need frequent mental and physical exercise. Therefore, they need an owner with sufficient time to provide them with various games, puzzles, and outdoor activities.

Despite being huge dogs, Bloodhounds are known to be extremely calm and patient, giving them the nickname "gentle giant." Their serene and sensitive nature makes them excellent companions to families with older children.

However, it's important to note that Bloodhounds can be independent-minded and stubborn, so it is essential to establish a consistent training schedule. Other (potential) setbacks to this breed are the tendencies to drool and snore loudly - but many Bloodhound owners find these traits endearing rather than annoying.

Bloodhounds can make a wide range of vocal sounds, but they are not big barkers. When out on walks, it is recommended to keep them leashed as they have a very strong prey drive and will chase scents if they get the chance.

Best homes for a Bloodhound

Bloodhounds thrive with active owners who take them out for daily walks, jogs and runs. This dog would adore having a garden to play in, but ensure it is fully enclosed as they are excellent escape artists, especially when they catch a whiff of an intriguing scent.

Bloodhounds make lovely family pets thanks to their gentle and patient attitude. They often become fab friends with the children they live with, but they are better for older children due to their large size.

Bloodhounds can get along well with other dogs and even cats, especially if they grow up with them. Still, as always, socialisation is vital to ensure they possess a friendly nature towards other animals.

FAQs about the Bloodhound

At The Pedigree Paws, we are committed to the responsible and healthy breeding of Bloodhound dogs. We work exclusively with licensed, regulated, and experienced breeders who share our values. As a result, our puppies are raised in a spacious and clean home, treated like cherished family members.

We take every necessary step to ensure that each puppy gets the best possible start in life. This includes arranging for health checks and vaccinations before they come to you, providing comprehensive health insurance, and partnering with the best pet transport company in the UK.

The Bloodhound is a loving, calm, and loyal canine that adores people and does well with children and other dogs. However, they have high energy levels, so they require an active owner who will include them in their daily activities.

As Bloodhounds enjoy the great outdoors, they thrive in country homes and are not suited for apartment life. However, make sure your garden is fully fenced off, as these hounds have impressive escape artist skills.

Our mission is to put a definitive end to unethical dog breeding practices in the UK. This is why we only collaborate with trustworthy Bloodhound breeders who raise their puppies in their personal homes, not in commercial breeding facilities.

To ensure that we maintain our high standards, we meticulously screen and conduct security checks on all our breeders before working with them. You can rest easy knowing that our commitment to promoting ethical breeding practices for all dogs remains unwavering.

The Bloodhound is a well-established breed that can live for 9 to 12 years with good care, nutrition, and regular health check-ups. Still, like all breeds, Bloodhounds are prone to some genetic health issues. In particular, they are prone to ear infections and eye conditions like Ectropion and Entropion.

To minimise the likelihood of health issues, finding a reputable and ethical breeder is essential. Thankfully, we do the hard work for you, finding the very best Bloodhound breeders in the UK and Europe and offering various medical services, including:

● A full health exam by a licensed, approved vet
● DNA testing for genetic health problems
● Core vaccinations (their vaccine booklet will be provided)
● Five weeks of health insurance

Our utmost concern is the well-being and contentment of our Bloodhound puppies and breeding dogs. As such, we adhere to a rigorous policy of keeping the pups with their mother until they naturally wean.

Typically, the puppies are ready for their forever homes when they reach the age of ten to twelve weeks. However, the timeline may be subject to change based on their unique growth and development. Reach out to the breeder for updates and an estimated "available date" for the pup you are interested in.

Finding a trustworthy pet breeder can be daunting, especially if you can't visit them in person due to distance. But fear not because we are here to assist you every step of the way. We will provide multiple pictures of your Bloodhound puppy and even schedule a video call with the breeder so you can make an informed decision.

Our top priority is your complete satisfaction, so you can trust that we will go above and beyond to ensure you are happy with your new furry friend.

We take great care to register every Bloodhound puppy with the correct pedigree organisation before they go to their new homes. This is crucial for maintaining breed standards and ensuring the puppies are healthy and free from inherited diseases. You can rest easy knowing that you will receive the official registration papers for your new pet, which will provide solid evidence of their health and pedigree status.

We specialise in providing healthy and well-behaved Bloodhound puppies. Our ethical breeders ensure that the puppies are raised with care and receive the necessary medical attention. They stay with their mother until they wean. During this time, they are socialised with various people and animals, making it easier for them to adjust to their new home and family.

Our Bloodhound puppies are nurtured in a cosy and affectionate family environment, where they live with their mother and littermates. Our skilled breeders emphasise the welfare and contentment of both the puppies and their mother dogs. They are kept together until the pups can fend for themselves and have passed veterinary evaluations. This is crucial to ensure that each Pedigree Paws puppy grows up to be a robust and pleasant companion.

When your new Bloodhound puppy arrives, they may feel a bit cautious or scared, despite their friendly nature. If this happens, you can follow some techniques to help them feel more comfortable.

Find a warm, quiet, dark, and peaceful area, like a bedroom, to set up for your puppy. Provide fresh water, yummy food, and a soft toy, and leave them to relax there for a few hours, especially if they have travelled a long way.

Don't show your puppy their new environment all at once. Instead, introduce them to one room at a time and gradually let them meet household members to avoid overwhelming them. It's also a good idea to keep your puppy on a leash during the first tour to establish roles for both you and your puppy.
