Breed traits and characteristics

Border Terriers were originally bred to be of assistance in foxhunts, by driving foxes out of their hiding holes and out into the open for hounds to chase. Today, these affectionate dogs are popular family pets and canine companions around the world.

These outgoing dogs are true workers with a strong hunting instinct and a powerful desire to dig. They are loving, loyal, and devoted companions for owners who are able to offer them plenty of mental and physical stimulation. One of the most remarkable traits of these dogs is their impressive stamina because of their ancestry of following horses all day long. Because of this, they need a tremendous amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation so they can become truly happy and well-rounded dogs. Without regular attention and exercise, they can become bored easily.

The Border Terrier has been around for many years. As their name suggests, these playful dogs originated from the border between Scotland and England. They have a fascinating ancestry that they share with the Bedlington, Dandie Dinmont, and Patterdale Terriers. While they have been around for a long time, it was only in 1920 that the Kennel Club officially recognised the breed.

10 reasons to add a Border terrier to your family

This breed was developed to handle the harsh climate of the borders between Scotland and England. Their coat is weather-resistant, and their skin is thick and loose, giving them plenty of protection from the elements and potential outdoor injuries.

You will only need to brush your Border Terrier once a week. Trimming it with a stripping knife twice a year is also best to keep it neat. Other than that, their coat pretty much takes care of itself.

Besides being easy to groom, you’ll be pleased to hear that a border terrier won’t leave piles of hair on your sofa and bed.

Always alert, a border terrier can tell when someone is about to come to your door or is hanging around outside the house.

Border Terriers are playful yet even-tempered and intelligent enough to know to be extra gentle and patient with children. This makes them wonderful family companions and playmates for kids.

These active and bouncy dogs are known to jump up to greet their owners. Even if they are napping, they will spring into action to give you the welcome home you deserve.

Border terriers don’t take themselves too seriously, and they will teach you to do the same. Their silly, playful antics will encourage you to find more joy and laughter in daily life.

These smart dogs can quickly pick things up, so teaching them tricks and commands can be super fun. But ensure you’re not unknowingly teaching them bad habits, as they will instantly learn those too!

If you are looking for a well-established and native British canine, you can’t go wrong with a border terrier.

Both literally and figuratively! These terriers can be a bit of a handful, but they are totally worth it!

Meet the Border Terrier

The Border Terrier is a small breed that stands 27 to 37 cm tall and weighs 5 to 7 kg. They have sturdy, compact bodies with long, lean legs, resulting in impressive stamina and long strides. In addition, their feet feature well-formed, thick pads to protect against harsh or cold surfaces.

The Border Terrier’s long legs set them apart from other Terriers, which typically have short limbs. This allows them to keep up with horses when out on a hunt.

The Border Terrier’s “otter-like” head is another distinctive trait of this breed. They have a fairly broad skull, a short muzzle, and small, v-shaped ears. Their noses are typically black but can be liver or flesh-coloured, although less common. They have medium-sized dark eyes giving an alert and eager-to-please expression.

The Border Terrier has a thick double coat, consisting of a short, dense undercoat and a coarse, wiry topcoat, protecting them from cold and extreme weather conditions. Their fur will be one of four colours; red, wheaten (similar to fawn), grizzle and tan, or blue and tan.

The temperament of a Border Terrier

Border Terriers have high intelligence and energy, so this dog needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation. They must be kept busy and given plenty of play opportunities and outdoor time.

Providing they get their exercise needs met, a border terrier will be a happy, affectionate, and delightful pet to have around the home. They thrive with active owners who can keep up with them and do well with families - their even temperament makes them suitable for children.

While border terriers are loyal and loving, they can also be determined and mischievous. So they are definitely not the most well-behaved dog in the world. However, if you’re looking for a challenge and want a small dog with a BIG personality, this is it.

It is easy to tell if your Border Terrier is not getting enough physical or mental stimulation as they will become loud or naughty. It is recommended to keep them busy with agility training and dog sports, which are ideal for a dog with such a keen and intelligent nature.

Border Terriers are protective, fearless, and not afraid to make noise, which makes them excellent watchdogs. You will no longer need a doorbell because this dog will alert you that someone is there before they even get a chance to knock.

Best homes for a Border Terrier

Because of their high energy, this dog best suits an owner who leads an active lifestyle. For example, a border terrier may be ideal if you go running or hiking regularly and are looking for a buddy to keep you company.

Their energetic nature is also a good fit for busy family homes as they thrive on all the activity. What’s more, they are very well-behaved and tolerant of children.

A home with an enclosed garden will also be perfect as they can burn off their excess energy healthily. But ensure your garden is fenced completely, as these dogs are escape artists!

While friendly with humans, a border terrier is not the best fit for a multi-pet home. They will likely get along well if they grow up with another animal. However, introducing them to a furry friend as an adult may prove difficult, even if they receive early socialisation. Moreover, because of their high prey drive, they are not recommended for homes with small animals.

FAQs about the Border terrier

At The Pedigree Paws, we breed Border Terriers responsibly with ethical values. We partner only with licensed, regulated, and experienced breeders who share our mission. Every puppy is born and nurtured in a secure, loving home environment with their mother and littermates.

In addition, our team arranges thorough health check-ups and vaccinations before delivery, and we offer comprehensive health insurance coverage for the first five weeks.

Border Terrier puppies are energetic, joyful canines full of love and devotion for their owners. However, their high energy levels mean they need a lot of physical and mental stimulation, including at least one long walk and regular play sessions throughout the day. For this reason, they are best suited to active people.

The Border Terrier's playful nature makes them an excellent fit for families. These dogs are very tolerant and patient with children, and they will help to keep each other entertained.

If you have small animals in the home, including cats, you may wish to choose another breed, though. Border Terriers have very high prey drives and are not the friendliest towards other animals in general.

We work closely with trustworthy Border Terrier breeders who prioritise raising their puppies in nurturing home environments as opposed to impersonal commercial facilities. Each breeder undergoes comprehensive screenings and security checks before being considered for partnership. It is our top priority to guarantee ethical breeding practices for all dogs under our care.

Although they are a well-established breed, Border Terriers are susceptible to some genetic health issues, such as Legg-Calves-Perthes Disease.

But don't let this put you off. To ensure a long and healthy life for your new puppy, we offer a range of health services before they join your family, including a complete health check-up by a licensed veterinarian, DNA testing to identify potential genetic health issues, age-appropriate core vaccinations, and five weeks of health insurance.

At Pedigree Paws, we place the utmost importance on the well-being and contentment of Border Terrier puppies and breeding dogs. To ensure the highest standard of care, we enforce a policy for our pups to remain with their mother until they are naturally weaned. This guarantees they receive the best possible nourishment and attention during their most crucial developmental stages.

Typically, we make our puppies available for adoption at around 10-12 weeks of age, but this timeline may vary depending on each pup's individual growth and progress. If you are interested in a specific Border Terrier puppy, contact the breeder for further details and an estimated delivery date.

We understand how tough it can be to find a trustworthy pet breeder, particularly if you can't visit in person. But worry not, as we are here to lend a helping hand every step of the way. We'll provide you with numerous pictures of your Border Terrier puppy and set up a video call with the breeder, so you can confidently make an informed decision.

Yes, before going to their new homes, all our Border Terrier puppies are registered with the appropriate pedigree organisation to maintain breed standards and minimise inherited illnesses. You will receive the official registration documents certifying your new puppy's pedigree status.

At Pedigree Paws, we deeply care about the well-being of our Border Terrier puppies. Our breeders pour their hearts into ensuring each pup receives the necessary care and socialisation with both humans and other animals.

Through this, we instil positive qualities and behavioural traits that will benefit them in their future homes. Our goal is to produce not only healthy and strong puppies but also friendly and well-behaved ones, so that they can bring joy to any loving family.

We understand how important it is to bring home a healthy and happy furry friend. That's why our Border Terrier puppies are raised with the utmost care alongside their mother and siblings in a real family home, not a commercial breeding facility.

Our experienced breeders also work closely with a qualified veterinarian to ensure each puppy is fully healthy before going to their new home. Thus, you can rest assured that your new companion will be well-adjusted and ready to bring love into your life.

Moving to a new home can be overwhelming for puppies, causing feelings of anxiety. However, there are steps you can take to help alleviate their stress.

Firstly, creating a cosy and calming environment for them to decompress is important. Choose a quiet room that is warm and dimly lit, like a bedroom, and furnish it with a soft bed, fresh water, and tasty food.

During the introduction process, it's best to take things slow. Introduce your furry friend to one room at a time and family members one-by-one to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed. By gradually acclimating them to their new surroundings, you can help ease their transition into their new home.
