Breed traits and characteristics

The Lhasa Apso is native to Tibet, where they became popular as effective watchdogs in palaces and monasteries. Today, these alert, willful small dogs are loved for their devotion to their owners, as well as their luxurious flowing coats.

Because of their history as watchdogs, Lhasa Apsos tend to be wary around strangers. This is not a dog breed that will invite a burglar into the home and show him where to find the silver. They are affectionate with family members but independent enough to not require constant attention.

When the Lhasa Apso first arrived in the United Kingdom in the 1920s, they were an instant hit and remain a firm favourite to this day.

These charming canine companions are fun-loving and affectionate dogs who take pride in their charismatic appeal. They make good family pets, however, they are better suited to families with older children.

Lhasa Apsos are lively, playful, and sometimes mischievous dogs which just adds to their appeal. They are also highly intelligent and often compared to a willful toddler. If you are looking for an independent, loyal, fun companion, the Lhasa Apso may be the breed for you.

10 reasons to add a Lhasa Apso to your family

If there's one thing the Lhasa Apso does best, it is looking out for and detecting danger. They have excellent hearing and will bark to alert you of any unfamiliar noise.

Lhasa Apsos are one of the few dog breeds with long enough hair to plait or put in a ponytail. So make sure you stock up on cute scrunchies!

Lhasa Apsos are one of the most independent dog breeds. With these pups, you won't have to worry about returning home to a distressed puppy and ruined furniture!

These dogs don't get scared quickly and will stand their ground. They have the spirit of a lion, and don't they show it!

The Lhasa Apso's gorgeous looks will make you want to pick them up and cuddle them all the time. Luckily, they aren't too hefty, so you can do so.

You won't find yourself walking for hours with this dog trying to burn off its excess energy. Instead, a short walk before and after your work day is ideal for a Lhasa Apso.

Although stubborn, if you find the correct training method, you'll be super impressed by what this pup can learn.

These pups once served as watchdogs in ancient Tibetan temples and palaces. Here, they would alert guards of any danger with their loud, sharp barks.

Tibetan tribes believed that when a person died, their soul briefly entered the body of their Lhasa Apso companion as they awaited reincarnation. Gifting someone a Lhasa Apso was also believed to bring the person good fortune.

These dogs have been owned by the likes of Gwen Stefani, Ellen Degeneres, and Jane Lynch. Many other famous people like Elizabeth Taylor and Kurt Vonnegut have also publicly expressed their love for this dog breed.

Meet the Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso is a small dog breed, standing 25 to 28 cm tall and weighing anywhere between 5.4 to 8 kg.

Their bodies are well-proportioned and compact, with strong loins and muscular hindquarters. At the bottom of their legs, you'll find cat-like feet with rounded, firm pads, creating a balanced appearance of strength and elegance.

The Lhasa Apso's most striking feature is its long, flowing coat. This plush fur has heavy feathering that covers large parts of their faces. For this reason, many Lhasa Apso owners tie their hair up into a cute ponytail on top of their heads.

Their legs, ears, and tails are also well-feathered and fluffy. The Lhasa Apsos double coat is long, straight, heavy, and neither woolly nor silky. Their coat can be one of many colours, including black, tan, cream, white, or red. In addition, they can have solid colouring or a combination of two or three colours.

Aside from their long beards and feathered ears, another distinctive feature of the Lhasa Apsos face is its black or brown button nose. Moreover, their oval-shaped eyes are equally dark in colour.

As they originated from a mountainous region 13,000 feet above sea level, these canines naturally developed broad muzzles and large lung capacities. These features allowed them to survive in the harsh weather conditions there. In addition, their long, thick coats would help to keep them warm.

The temperament of a Lhasa Apso

While the Lhasa Apso has a long history as a watchdog, these canines have many more beautiful qualities to bring to the table than just protection.

They make highly affectionate and loving family dogs. They are also super bright and can learn almost anything you teach them. However, this breed can be stubborn, so if you want to train them to do tricks and follow commands, you'll need to be patient and consistent.

As a watchdog, Lhasa Apsos develop deep bonds with their owners that last a lifetime. However, as you may expect, these dogs can be a bit aloof to strangers and take some time to accept new people. So bear in mind this is not a dog who will welcome all your guests with a welcoming tail wag and lick.

While they will devote themselves to you, Lhasa Apsos see themselves as your leader rather than the other way around. This is linked to their highly independent nature. You'll notice the difference between Lhasa Apsos and other dogs, as they are not needy.

Their independence is good, though, as they can be left alone for reasonable periods. In addition, they only need moderate exercise; a daily 20-minute walk and some short play sessions are usually sufficient.

Lastly, training and early socialisation are vital for this breed to reduce their wariness towards strangers and noises.

Best homes for a Lhasa Apso

Lhasa Apsos do great as family dogs but are best suited to those with older children. They sometimes require their own space, so they don't appreciate having little kids always follow them around and pick them up.

While their small size makes them seem ideal for apartment life, remember that these dogs can bark a fair amount as they hear more than we do.

Lhasa Apsos can get along with other dogs, provided they are socialised gradually. But as these dogs like to take the role of the leader, training will be required to ensure harmonious living.

FAQs about the Lhasa Apso

We've selected the very best Lhasa Apso breeders in the United Kingdom who are all fully licensed and experienced in what they do. In addition, our breeders raise their Lhasa Apso puppies in their home with the pup's parents and siblings, the most ethical way to breed dogs.

Your Lhasa Apso will also have a comprehensive health check with a vet and DNA test before coming to you. Moreover, they also come with 5 weeks of health insurance for further peace of mind. Thus, you can be confident that you're getting a healthy and even-tempered puppy who will grow into an excellent family pet.

And don't worry if you live far from the breeder and cannot collect your new pup yourself. We use the safest and most reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel in the UK.

Lhasa Apsos serve as excellent watchdogs and wonderful family pets. They are incredibly loving and loyal, quickly becoming an integral part of the family. They are also very bright, and if you are patient with them, you can teach them some super cool tricks.

However, note that this pup is not overly friendly with strangers. They are naturally wary of new people and must suss them out before deciding whether to accept them. Thus, if you want a dog who is instantly loving to everyone they meet, this is not the breed for you.

Our big vision at The Pedigree Paws is eradicating unethical and unlicensed dog breeding in the UK and beyond. This is why we only work with licensed, private Lhasa Apso breeders with years of industry experience rather than commercial breeders with questionable ethics.

We are also incredibly proud to say that all our breeders raise their Lhasa Apso puppies in their own homes. We strongly believe this is the most loving and safe environment for a puppy to grow up in - and the only ethical way to breed animals. In the breeder's home, the puppies stay with the mother dog and only leave when they are 100% ready.

We have created a strict and thorough application process to ensure we work with only ethical breeders, including various checks. Every breeder must pass these to work with us.

Lhasa Apso puppies are generally very healthy, but there are some health conditions that they can be prone to as they grow up.

Therefore, we do everything we can to ensure your new puppy will come to you in full health and stay that way. This includes,

● A complete health check-up with a licenced vet before coming to you
● A clean DNA health test that screen for genetic diseases (you'll receive the results)
● Their first two core vaccinations and their vaccine booklet
● Microchipping and five weeks of health insurance starting from the arrival date

All our Lhasa Apso puppies stay in the breeder's home with the mother dog until they are fully weaned and independent enough to leave. For this reason, they won't be ready to come to you until they are at least 8-10 weeks old.

Suppose your Lhasa Apso puppy is under 10 weeks old. In that case, your breeder will update you on their development and let you know when you can expect to welcome them into our home.

Choosing a new puppy is super exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking as you want to ensure you are getting a healthy, even-tempered pup. Therefore, we offer several things to make the experience as enjoyable as possible, such as photos of the puppy and its parents.

We are also happy to arrange a video call with the breeder if you have further questions or concerns.

Absolutely! All The Pedigree Paws breeders register their Lhasa Apso puppies with one of the top international pedigree organisations, typically The Kennel Club. Thus, this will already be done before you get your new pup, and you'll receive the original registration documents.

We only allow breeders to advertise their puppies on our platform if we are 100% sure they run licensed, moral operations. To ensure this, we have a thorough application procedure in place that each breeder must complete. Part of this procedure involves conducting checks to prove the breeder's authenticity.

In addition, all our breeders are fully licensed and registered with The Kennel Club or a similar reputable internationally-recognised organisation.

Our Lhasa Apso puppies are born in the breeder's home, where they stay with their parents and siblings until they are ready to go to their forever home. This loving environment gives them the best start in life and allows them to receive vital early socialisation.

Lhasa Apsos are naturally wary of strangers, so it may take a little while for them to feel fully settled and at ease with you. Still, there are some things you can do to support this process.

First, when your new pup arrives, keep them in one room for the first few hours to decompress and get their bearings. Provide a cosy bed, preferably in a dark corner, where they can feel safe.

Once they become more comfortable and curious, show them around the house on a leash. This step is vital for this breed because if you do not show them you are the leader immediately, they will try to establish that role instead!
