Breed traits and characteristics

The Shar Pei is believed to be one of the most ancient dog breeds. They were originally bred to guard, herd, and hunt in their native country, China. This dog breed is one of the most recognised in the world because of the wrinkles around their faces and their blue or black tongues. The latter is an unusual trait that is only shared with one other dog breed, the Chow Chow. Another distinguishing feature of the Shar Pei is their coat, which is bristly to touch even though it looks soft.

The Shar Pei name means ‘sand skin’. referring to their distinct, bristle-like coat. But that's not the only thing uncommon about the Chinese Shar-Pei's coat. They are a solid mass of loose wrinkles and folds of skin that make them look like they are wearing a large, oversized suit.

Aside from their unique appearance, the Shar Pei has many personality traits that make them perfect for family living. They are loyal, calm, intelligent, and protective. They are also independent thinkers, that are known to be reserved around strangers – a trait that stems from their history as guard dogs and fighting dogs. This makes them excellent watchdogs; however, consistent training is necessary to ensure they understand their role in the family.

The Shar Pei we see today is less wrinkled and taller than the original dogs that first came out of China. In fact, back in the 1970s, this amazing dog breed was once considered to be one of the rarest breeds in the world. But, through the efforts of devoted breeders, the Shar Pei has steadily gained in popularity once again.

10 reasons to add a Shar Pei to your family

With a short, one-layer coat, you only need to brush these dogs once a week (at the most), and they don’t shed much either.

If you live in an isolated area or a town with high crime rates, having a Shar Pei around will keep you out of harm’s way.

Behind their strong and protective persona, these dogs are super affectionate and love to cuddle with their owners.

From their bristle-like fur to their wrinkled skin to their blue-coloured tongues, these canines are certainly unique!

Unlike other wrinkled breeds, the Shar Pei has skin folds all over their body. They are also exceptionally wrinkly as a puppy, resembling a chubby human baby!

These canines are pretty low maintenance in terms of their physical and mental health. They are happy to laze around and don’t need constant attention or play.

Linked to the above point, Shar Peis are pretty independent and laid back. Therefore, if you work from home, you won’t get constantly hassled by this pup, though he will probably be keeping a watchful eye on you!

Many Shar Pei owners believe these dogs can tune into the emotions and needs of their humans. They can also tell when their owners are on their way home, even when they are still far away.

Although they only came to England in the 1980s, Shar Peis are believed to have been in China since about 200 BC.

In fact, the Shar Pei was the rarest dog breed in the world in the 60s and 70s, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Meet the Shar Pei

The Shar Pei is a medium-sized dog that stands 18 to 20 inches tall and weighs between 18 to 26 kg. They have compact, muscular, and square-shaped bodies with long, thick necks and large, robust heads.

Shar Pei means “sand skin”, which relates to this pup’s unique coat that is rough and bristly, like sandpaper. Another distinct appearance trait is their loose skin folds noticeable on their face and all over their body but most apparent on their neck, back, and forehead.

The Shar Pei has a short muzzle and blue-black tongue, another distinct trait of this breed. Their ears are small, thick, set high on their heads, and triangled shaped, although the tips are rounded and fold down slightly. Their eyes are almond-shaped and dark in colour, matching their wide, dark nose.

Shar Peis have short fur (1.25 - 2.5 cm long) and no undercoat. It is straight and stands away from the body. Their coats can be any solid colour except white; black, chocolate, blue, and cream are the most common shades.

The temperament of a Shar Pei

Shar Peis are intelligent, independent, loyal, and protective. As they were originally bred to guard and protect humans, you can expect this canine to always have his eye out for potential danger.

Unlike other breeds, they act aloof and guarded towards strangers until they understand they are friends, not foes. That said, they are very calm and will not bark or get aggressive.

If you’re looking for a guard dog, this is, hands down, one of the best breeds. But if you want a super friendly pup who is welcoming to everyone they meet, a Shar Pei may not be the right choice for you.

While they don’t adore strangers, these dogs are never short of attention for their owners. They develop intense, loyal bonds with their humans and will vow to protect them at all costs.

However, their protective streak can be too much, and most Shar Peis require consistent training and leadership to help them learn their role in the family. In addition, they can be pretty strong-willed when it comes to training. Because of this, they are best suited to people with previous dog experience.

These dogs are not highly active; 40-50 minutes of exercise daily is typically sufficient and can include a short walk and a few short play sessions. Provided they get enough exercise, Shar Peis are generally happy to spend most of the day lazing around, although they are always alert even if they don’t look like it.

Best homes for a Shar Pei

The Shar Pei is an excellent dog for families as they protect and love all their humans, including children. However, a Shar Pei should be introduced to the children while they are young; if you have a baby years after getting a Shar Pei, it will be harder to socialise them.

Moreover, these dogs can easily knock over a small child because they are large and heavy. Thus, they are best suited to families with older children.

As the Shar Pei has a history as a fighting dog, they do best as an only pet. That said, if they grow up without another dog, they can get on well. But introducing them to a new dog as an adult is not recommended.

FAQs about the Shar Pei

We've selected the very best Shar Pei breeders in the UK and Europe; they are all fully licensed, reputable and have experience with this specific breed. In addition, the puppies are bred and raised in the breeders' homes, so they get socialised with humans immediately.

What's more, we are dedicated to ensuring every puppy we facilitate the sale of is healthy. Thus, all the puppies you see on our platform receive a complete medical check with a vet and a DNA test to scan for genetic diseases. We also include 5 weeks of health insurance from the day you receive them.

Moreover, we work with the most reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel in the UK, so if your new puppy is located far from you, don't worry. Our partner travel company will bring your Shar Pei pup to you in the safest and most stress-free way.

Shar Peis are incredibly loyal, devoted, and loving. They are an excellent choice if you're looking for a canine to protect your family and guard your home. However, if you want a pup who will become best friends with everyone they meet, they are not it.

Shar Peis are also quite strong-willed and stubborn, which makes training challenging. Yet training is essential for ensuring they understand their role in the family. Thus, they are best suited to people who have previous experience having dogs as pets.

Our vision is to stop unethical, unlicensed pet breeding in the UK (and beyond). For this reason, we only work with licensed private Shar Pei breeders who clearly demonstrate ethical operations and possess significant industry experience.

All our Shar Pei breeders raise their puppies in their own family homes. This is by far the best (and only acceptable) environment for dogs to be bred in for several reasons, such as:

1. They can stay with their mother for ample time and wean naturally.
2. They receive individual care and attention (from the mama dog and the breeder).
3. They get to socialise with various humans and other animals from the day they're born.

Shar Pei dogs, unfortunately, have several health concerns, so we take extra care and caution to ensure the ones on our platform will live long and healthy lives.

To give you peace of mind when choosing your new furry friend, every puppy from Pedigree Paws receives the following:
● A complete medical check-up with a licenced veterinarian
● A DNA test that checks for various genetic diseases they may carry
● Their first two core vaccinations and a microchip implanted
● 5 weeks of health insurance

All Shar Pei puppies must stay with the mother dog until they reach 8 to 10 weeks old. This is because the first two to three months are essential for a puppy's development. Moreover, we do not support forced weaning; we believe every pup should find independence at its own rate.

If the Shar Pei puppy you're interested in is under 10 weeks old, the breeder will let you know when to expect to bring them home and keep you updated on its development.

As loving pet owners, we know there is a mix of excitement and apprehension when it comes to choosing a new furry friend.

So, to make the experience as enjoyable and worry-free as possible, we offer multiple things. For example, you'll get several photos of the puppy and its parents, and you can also arrange a call with the breeder to meet the pup virtually.

Yes, of course. Our breeders register each puppy with the relevant pedigree institution for that breed, usually The Kennel Club. They complete the registration process before your puppy arrives, so you don't have to worry about doing it yourself. Of course, you'll also get the original registration documents.

At Pedigree Paws, we are committed to ensuring our puppies come from the most ethical, safe, and loving environment. Thus, we do several things to ensure every breeder we work with runs a licensed, moral operation.

To give you an idea, every breeder must complete our thorough application procedure and pass the various checks we carry out before they can work with us.

All these puppies are born in the breeder's home and stay here until they are physically, mentally, and emotionally ready to go to their forever home. In this family environment, they get constant access to their mother's milk (and love!) and early socialisation with humans and other animals, helping them grow into fantastic family pets.

We believe this is the only ethical way to breed pets, so you can rest assured that we don't work with commercial breeding facilities.

Shar Peis are naturally aloof towards strangers, and as a young puppy, leaving their mother is a big deal. So it's expected that they may feel a bit scared and apprehensive when they arrive at your home. However, there are some things you can do to make this transition as stress-free as possible, such as:

● When your new pup arrives, stay in one room with them for the first few hours. Ensure the room is quiet, fairly dark, and free from constant activity.
● Create a safe space for your puppy to retreat to; a cosy bed in a dark corner is ideal. Be sure to leave this there until your puppy seems fully settled and comfortable.
● When you first show your Shar Pei around the home, keep them leashed. This is essential for this breed; Shar Peis tend to try to take the Alpha role if they don't understand who is the leader.
