Breed traits and characteristics

Siberian Huskies have gorgeous, thick coats that come in a variety of colours and patterns. Their blue or sometimes multi-coloured eyes and stunning facial masks add to their overall appeal. The Siberian Husky, as the name suggests, originated in the cold climate of Siberia by the Chukchi people. Over the years, these dogs became famed for their hard-work ethic, pulling sleds across icy and snowy terrain.

It’s not difficult to see why many dog lovers are attracted to the Siberian Husky’s wolf-like appearance. However, this is a smart, athletic breed with an independent streak that can make them challenging for novice owners. These dogs are more suited to owners who understand their unique needs. Huskies are working dogs that need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to remain happy. So, ensure you have the time to devote to these impressive canines.

With their eye-catching looks and superb talents, Siberian Huskies have become popular muses with film producers, artists, and writers. This medium-sized working dog holds power, athleticism, and an endearing charm. However, to get the most out of this breed you need to make sure they are well socialised and constantly trained so they understand their place in the pack. This social breed can be an ideal canine companion for active families who can ensure that these dogs get all the attention, exercise, and training they need to thrive.

10 reasons to add a Siberian Husky to your family

Although they can be silly and playful at times, these dogs are very smart, which makes them easy to train and a joy to live with.

You won't find much more of a people-loving canine than a Siberian Husky. They are welcoming to everyone they meet and make friends instantly.

When Huskies live in a home with children, they quickly become their best friends and are known to develop very loving and gentle relationships with kids.

As pack dogs, Huskies love being around other canines.

Huskies need at least 60 to 90 minutes of exercise daily, so bringing a Husky home is like gaining a personal trainer! Never again will you be a couch potato.

Siberian Huskies were bred to need less food than other similarly sized breeds. Therefore, you won't have to fork out half your wages to feed this dog as you would with other dogs their size.

You may dread the subzero temperatures every time winter comes around, but your Husky won't be bothered. Originating from Siberia, an English winter is nothing for this dog!

Huskies are known as "self-cleaning" dogs, which makes them super low maintenance in the grooming department. You only need to brush them once or twice a week, and they hardly ever need baths.

Huskies are an in-demand breed, and while they are not rare, their popularity does mean they are one of the more expensive canines.

Siberian Huskies look like a cross between a wolf and a teddy bear. Their lush fur, "face mask", and colourful eyes make this breed one of the most beautiful canines around.

Meet the Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are medium-sized canines with a distinct wolf-like appearance. They stand 51 to 60 cm tall and weigh between 15 and 27 kg; males are often significantly larger than females.

As working dogs in an unforgiving climate, Huskies have robust, muscular bodies, with a level topline, deep chest, and long, thick neck. Their heads feature strong jaws, long muzzles, and well-chiselled cheekbones.

Their coat patterning creates a "face mask", an iconic appearance trait of this breed. Most Huskies possess striking light blue eyes, but they can be brown or one of each colour. In addition, their eyes are set wide apart, unlike their ears that, sit high on their head closely together and are triangular in shape.

Siberian Huskies have dense double coats with medium-length hair. The undercoat is thicker and softer than the top coat, and their tails are well-feathered to create a bushy, fox-like tail. Their feet are also heavily covered in fur, with webbing between the toes, two traits designed to help them stay warm in the harsh Siberian climate.

A Husky's coat can be one of many different colours and with varying markings. However, grey and white, black and white, sable and white, and red and white are all standard coat colours for this breed.

The temperament of a Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are energetic yet gentle, hardworking yet cuddly, and independent yet friendly. They adore human company, are highly social, and are very welcoming to everyone they meet, including children. This makes them wonderful companion dogs for all types of families.

However, these canines are used to living in packs, so they require training to understand who the alpha is.

Huskies are playful and a little mischievous, so they may try to test your boundaries, but they are very smart and understand when no means no! Firm, positive reinforcement training is best for this breed.

Huskies should also be leash trained as they love to run and have a lot of energy to get rid of. Because of their high energy levels, they do require more exercise than some other breeds. However, you will soon know if they are not getting enough exercise, as they resort to destructive behaviour when bored.

Huskies can also be loud dogs known to howl rather than bark. However, you can minimise this by keeping them entertained and training them from an early age.

Best homes for a Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are an excellent fit for families with children, as they match the high energy of a kid. They are also very gentle towards children, but of course, as a big dog, they could accidentally knock over a baby or small child. Thus, supervision is still needed.

Huskies love to do activities with their humans, whether hiking, camping, or canoeing. So they naturally thrive with an active, outdoorsy person willing to take them on their adventures.

Finally, as Huskies originally lived in packs, they are used to being around dogs and enjoy the canine company. However, when it comes to cats, it depends on the specific Husky. As they can have strong prey drives, some Huskies chase cats while others leave them alone. Typically, if a Husky puppy grows up around a cat, it will be calm around feline

FAQs about the Siberian Husky

We work with the top Siberian Husky breeders in the UK and Europe who are licensed, reputable, and meet the high standards of international breeding associations. In addition, these Husky puppies are bred and raised in the breeders' homes, which is the only ethical way to breed pets.

In addition, we are dedicated to ensuring every Pedigree Paws puppy is healthy with minimal likelihood of inheriting health conditions. As a result, all our Siberian Husky puppies receive a complete medical check with a vet and undergo a DNA test that scans for genetic-related diseases. We also include 5 weeks of health insurance.

As Siberian Huskies are an in-demand breed, you may not live close to a breeder. However, this is no problem as we work with a reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel company that can bring your new puppy to you in the safest and most stress-free way.

Siberian Huskies are social, people-orientated, and super friendly. This makes them a good fit for families with children, whom they are typically very gentle towards. Huskies also get along well with other dogs as they are used to living in packs.

However, you should note that these canines have a lot of energy and need ample exercise each day. Without it, they can become destructive. Huskies are also prone to howling, which can be controlled through training but not completely eliminated. For this reason, a Husky may not be the best fit if you live in an apartment or flat.

We aim to stop all unlicensed and unethical pet breeding in the UK and beyond. For this reason, we only work with licensed, experienced, and ethical Siberian Husky breeders.

In addition, as private breeders, they raise their puppies in their family homes, where they get early socialisation with humans and other animals. This is the only ethical environment for dogs to be bred as they can stay with their mother for ample time and wean naturally.

Like most breeds, Siberian Huskies are prone to some genetic diseases. However, these risks should be minimised when bred by an ethical and licenced breeder.

Even so, we do all we can to give you total peace of mind when choosing your new furry friend. As a result, every puppy from Pedigree Paws receives the following:

● A thorough medical check-up with a licenced veterinarian
● A DNA test that scans for genetic diseases in the bloodline
● Their first two core vaccinations and a microchip
● Five weeks of health insurance

All Husky puppies must stay with the mother dog until they are at least 8-10 weeks old. The first two to three months of a puppy's life are essential for its health, development and temperament. Moreover, they need this time to wean naturally and find independence at their own rate.

If the puppy you want is under 10 weeks old, the breeder will give you an estimated "ready date" and update you on its development.

As enthusiastic and loving pet owners, we know there is a mix of emotions when it comes to choosing a new furry friend.

So, to make the experience more enjoyable than worrying, we always provide photos of the puppy and its parents so you can see for yourself that they are healthy and cared for. If you still have concerns, we will happily arrange a call between you and the breeder to meet the pup virtually.

Yes, of course, all our breeders register each puppy with the relevant pedigree breeding institution or kennel club for that breed. They will complete the registration process before your puppy comes to you, so you don't have to worry about doing it yourself. Of course, you'll also get the original registration documents either before or at the same time as getting your puppy.

At Pedigree Paws, we ensure our Husky puppies come from the safest, most ethical, loving environment. Thus, we do multiple things to ensure each breeder we work with runs a 100% moral operation.

For example, to join our platform, a breeder must successfully complete our thorough application procedure and pass the various checks we carry out.

All our Husky puppies are born in the breeder's family home, where they will stay until they are physically, mentally, and emotionally ready to go to their forever home. In this environment, they are well cared for by both the mum and breeder, and they are already receiving vital socialisation with humans and other animals.

Note that we do not and will never work with commercial breeding facilities such as puppy mills and pet farms.

Siberian Huskies are super friendly and social pups, but they may initially be a bit scared - leaving their mum is a big deal, after all! So, to help them feel at home straight away here's what you can do:

● Keep them in one room with the door closed for the first few hours rather than letting them explore the entire home immediately.
● Create a safe space for your Husky to go if they feel overwhelmed. This can be a cosy bed in a quiet and dark corner or a crate (as crate training is recommended for this breed).
● When showing them around, keep them leashed. This is important, so they immediately understand you are the pack's Alpha.
