Breed traits and characteristics

Pembroke Welsh Corgis, also known as Pembrokes, PWCs, or Pems, are recognised as the smallest of the American Kennel Club's Herding Group. They were originally bred to herd cattle, sheep, and horses in the Pembrokeshire area of Wales, United Kingdom.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are energetic, intelligent, and easy to train. These dogs are always willing and keen to please their owners. Unlike their cousins, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs are very outgoing and social. So, they are generally great with kids and other pets.

The Pembroke is adaptable and affectionate. They can fit into any household or lifestyle, whether it is a big house in the country or an apartment in the city. Just make sure to provide daily exercise because these dogs have a lot of stamina and energy despite their small size. You will even be surprised at how quickly these short-legged dogs can move. Overall, the Pembroke is a great choice for families and first-time dog owners.

These adorable dogs are known for their intelligence and determination. Pembroke dogs are comical and active, and want to be involved in every action happening in the household. They are definitely big personalities wrapped in small packages!

10 reasons to add a Welsh Corgi - Pembroke to your family

The pups respond well to positive reinforcement training methods, which makes them a good choice for first-time dog owners.

Pems are full of love for their owners and want to be involved in everything you do.

Many Pem owners report these dogs as having a wonderful sense of humour. They are funny and quirky and make an all-around feel-good pet.

Despite having a robust body structure, these pups are lightweight enough for most people to pick up and carry.

Most Pembrokes are in awe around children and match their high energy. As long as you train them not to nip, they can become an excellent part of the family.

Pems are small enough to live in apartments and flats. Moreover, provided they get daily walks, and plenty of playtime, they don't necessarily need a home with a garden

Not because they look big and scary, but because they bark at anything and everything. So if someone approaches your house at night, they will quickly scarper as soon as your pup notices them

While they have high energy and love to go on long walks, these pups equally enjoy snuggling up with you on the couch.

From their coat colour and pattern to their head shape and pointy ears, Pembrokes have a unique fox-like appearance.

Originating from the Welsh countryside, these pups are designed for and used to the temperamental British weather.

Meet the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the smallest herding dog of the American Kennel Club's Herding Group. They stand 25 to 30 inches tall and weigh 11 to 14 kg, making them noticeably shorter than their cousins, the Cardis.

They have a long, robust body structure held low to the ground with very short yet muscular legs. They have a fox-like head, which is flat between their rounded, naturally erect ears. In addition, they have strong jaws, muzzles that taper down to their black noses, and round, medium-sized eyes, which are usually dark in colour.

Pembrokes have straight, medium-length double coats consisting of a dense undercoat and rough top coat. Their coat is naturally water and dirt-repellent, designed for working out in the fields in all weathers. However, as they shed heavily, they need regular brushing.

The breed has four standard colours: black and tan, fawn, red, or sable; not as many shade options as their cousins, the Cardis. Whichever of the four coat colours a Pem has, they will have white markings on their legs, brisket, and neck.

The temperament of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are known to be social butterflies, one reason why they have become such popular family pets. They are energetic, animated, and playful and want to be involved in everything their humans do.

Unlike Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Pems are very friendly towards new people. They bark when someone is at the door, but as soon as they realise they are not a threat, they will start trying to make friends with them immediately.

As working dogs, they also have a natural eagerness to please, so they are always on the lookout for ways they can "assist" their owners. However, this breed can quickly get bored if they don't have enough things to do. Thus, they require regular and diverse mental and physical stimulation, such as games, walks, and interactive toys.

While their lively nature is cute and funny, their enthusiasm can sometimes get too much. Because of this, you should begin training a Pem as a young puppy as this will help to redirect their high energy and over-excitement to something productive.

Pems are also highly intelligent and learn things very quickly. However, they can sometimes be willful and stubborn, which is another reason why it is essential to start training them from an early age. Moreover, because they love to play, Pems enjoy when their owners incorporate games into their training and will be more likely to respond when you do so.

As highly social dogs, these pups don't do well if left alone for long. They will quickly get separation anxiety, leading to destructive behaviour. Thus, they are not suited to people who are not home often or who work long hours.

Best homes for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgis adore being around children and will play with them for hours. Moreover, because of their small size, you won't have to worry about a Pem accidentally knocking over or squashing a small child.

However, if you're considering bringing a Pembroke into a home with children, remember that these dogs have herding instincts. Without training, they may try to herd children and nip at their feet, so start teaching them what is right or wrong straight away.

Welsh Corgis can be territorial towards other canines. This doesn't mean they can't have a furry friend, but it is best to introduce them as a puppy rather than as an adult.

FAQs about the Welsh Corgi - Pembroke

We only work with private, licensed and reputable Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders from Britain who meet our high standards and demonstrate ethical operations. All our breeders raise their puppies in their family home rather than a commercial facility, and they receive socialisation with humans and other animals from birth.

In addition, we take the health of each puppy exceptionally seriously. To ensure your new pup has minimal likelihood of inheriting genetic health conditions, they have a medical check-up and a DNA test that scans for various diseases.

What's more, we have partnered with a reputable veterinarian-approved pet travel company. So if the breeder is located too far from you to pick up the puppy yourself, we will arrange for your new pup to travel to you in a safe and stress-free way.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are social, affectionate, intelligent, and active dogs. However, they need a fair amount of exercise and get bored easily, so they best suit sporty people or families with young kids to play with. Moreover, as they are easy to train, they can be suitable for first-time dog owners.

However, note that these dogs can suffer separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Thus, if you work long hours or are not home often, they may not be the best canine for you.

We dream of a world free from unethical pet breeding. To play our role in making this a reality, we choose only to work with private, licensed, experienced breeders. They also demonstrate ethical breeding and raise their puppies in their family homes.

In this environment, they are around humans and other dogs from birth. They also get to stay with their mother until they are fully ready.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are relatively hardy as a pretty old breed and working dog. But of course, this does not mean they are immune to all diseases.

We do various things to ensure your new pup is as healthy as can be. This includes having a medical check-up, a DNA test to scan for genetic diseases, their first two core vaccinations, and microchipping. What's more, we include five weeks of health insurance for all puppies for additional peace of mind.

In most cases, Pembroke puppies stay with their mother in the breeder's home until they reach 10 weeks old. The first two to three months of a puppy's life are crucial for its health, well-being, and development. This is also the time it takes for them to wean at a natural and healthy rate.

However, puppies develop at different rates, so the specific date your puppy will be ready will vary. If they are not yet ready for their forever home, the breeder will keep you updated on the pup's development until then.

As beloved pet owners, we know how complex choosing a new furry friend is. So naturally, you want to do everything you can to ensure your new pup is healthy and friendly.

One of the best ways to ensure this is to see the puppy and its parents before purchasing. While you may live too far from the breeder to meet them in person, we will provide photos of the puppy and its parents. What's more, if you have additional concerns, you can set up a call with the breeder to meet the pup virtually.

Yes, of course. All our breeders register their puppies with The Kennel Club, which proves they meet the breed standard for Pembroke Welsh Corgis and are clear of hereditary diseases. They will complete the registration before your puppy arrives, so you'll receive the original registration documents along with the puppy.

At The Pedigree Paws, we guarantee our Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies come from a 100% safe, clean, and ethical environment. We can assure you this as we have a thorough application process for every breeder to complete, and we run various checks on their breeding business.

Every breeder we work with is licensed and registered with the relevant breeding organisation. Moreover, we only work with private breeders, not commercial facilities, as the latter are renowned for unethical breeding.

Every puppy you see on The Pedigree Paws spends the first two months of its life with its mother and siblings in the breeder's family home. After that, they only leave here when they are fully weaned and physically, mentally, and emotionally ready for their forever home. They also socialise with humans and other dogs in this environment, helping them become even-tempered and well-mannered canines.

Pembrokes are friendly around new people but can initially be a little wary or scared. So here are a few things you can do to help them settle in quickly.
● When your Pem arrives, avoid the urge to show them around the entire home and introduce them to everyone immediately. Instead, put them in one room (which is quiet) for the first few hours to give them time to settle.
● Create a cosy, safe space for your Pembroke pup to go to should they feel scared or overwhelmed. A soft bed in a dark, noise-free corner is ideal.
● Lastly, let your pup settle in at its own pace. Don't force them to play if they don't want to. You will know when they are ready to become friends with you!
