Breed traits and characteristics

Developed in Russia as a hunting and coursing dog breed, the Borzoi was known to hunt in teams to go after foxes, wolves, and rabbits. Then, they became famous as canine companions for aristocracy and royalty all over Europe.

Borzoi are highly prized for their sweet dispositions and grace. They are also known for their speed in contrast with their mellow and easygoing personalities. These active dogs enjoy a quick dash to long-distance running but also love to curl up on the couch when the mood strikes them.

Even with their regal appearance and relaxed character, this breed is not just a showpiece. Known for having a mind of their own, the Borzoi adores and enjoys human companionship. However, these affectionate dogs are not ideal for those individuals who are away from home for long periods. Also, if you can’t provide for their intense grooming needs, the Borzoi may not be the best choice for you. These dogs shed profusely. While adult Borzoi dogs are gentle, puppies are very enthusiastic. They are known to get along well with children of all ages but they can be timid around strangers. Furthermore, because of their large size, they may be better off in homes with older children.

These athletic dogs do well in canine sports. Not only are they beautiful in the show ring, but they can compete well in obedience, rally, and agility. But the Borzoi shines the best in lure coursing fields because it is their natural instinct to chase. In addition, these high-energy dogs are sometimes utilized in open field coursing to hunt jackrabbits and protect livestock against coyotes.

Today, they are no longer just a royal hunting companion. With their gentleness and sweetness, they excel now as family pets and canine companions.

10 reasons to add a Borzoi to your family

Once a Borzoi reaches adulthood, they become super chilled and love nothing more than lounging around with their owner.

When a Borzoi feels well-cared for, they will repay you with constant love and endearment.

If you want to give your child a canine friend, choose a Borzoi. They are gentle, patient, and loving, yet they still have playful and clownish antics to make your kids laugh every day!

While energy levels vary from dog to dog, many Borzois are content with a 20-30 minute daily walk.

Borzois do just fine in both winter and summer. This is because their undercoat thickens in cold climates to keep them warm, then sheds in hot weather to prevent overheating.

These dogs rarely bark or make other sounds. So if you are after a peaceful breed, choose a Borzoi.

Borzois were incredibly popular among Russian and European royals. Moreover, Queen Victoria of England popularised Borzoi outside of Russia.

As Borzois are a symbol of high status, they have also been owned by many celebrities, including Michael Douglas and Rod Stewart.

Borzoi's popularity is only increasing. Since 2020, many memes and videos of this dog breed have been on social media, particularly relating to their long snout.

Borzois remain pretty rare in the UK and Europe, so if you want a dog that no one else has, there is a fab option.

Meet The Borzoi

The Borzoi is a large, tall dog with an average height of 68 to 85 cm. They can also be pretty hefty, varying from 27 to 48 kg.

Borzoi's body structure is long, lean, graceful, and well-balanced. However, while they look slim, they are highly muscled, with powerful front and hind quarters allowing them to sprint at lightning speed. Their hindquarters are wider than their shoulders, which gives them good balance and stability as they run.

Borzoi's long legs are carried by oval-shaped front feet with well-arched, closed toes. Their tails are another trait that adds to their graceful demeanour, long, well-feathered, and set low.

Borzois have long, well-chiselled heads with visible bone structures and veins. They possess long, deep jaws, large black noses, and dark-rimmed almond-shaped eyes. Moreover, Borzoi's ears are small, pointed, and set high on the head. They usually hold their ears in a folded-back position.

Borzois boast long, silky coats that can be straight, wavy, or slightly curly. The length of the hair differs; it is short on the head, ears, and front of the legs while long on the rest of the body.

These dogs also have heavy feathering in certain areas, including the hindquarters, backs of the legs, chest, and tail. They may also have a curly frill on their neck. Their fur can be almost any colour, but white is common.

The silky texture of Borzoi's coat is resistant to dirt and mud, meaning they have low grooming needs. Brushing them once or twice a week is usually sufficient.

The temperament of a Borzoi

Borzois are known for their mellow, easy-going personalities, which makes them wonderful canine companions. However, note that as puppies, they are typically very playful and enthusiastic, being calmer as they get older.

While they don't have high energy or exercise needs, these dogs can run extremely fast. What's more, if they catch sight of something intriguing, they will dash off instantly. Because of this, Borzois are one breed that should be kept leashed when out walking.

Borzois adore being around people and show their owners plenty of affection. Even so, some Borzois may appear aloof to strangers, so early socialisation is essential for this breed.

Because of their calm demeanour, Borzois are very gentle and patient around children. They are also quiet canines, so you don't have to worry about excessive barking whenever you go out or come home.

Still, don't mistake Borzoi's easy-going nature for not needing attention and interaction. These dogs must be around their humans often; otherwise, they get lonely and experience separation anxiety.

Another interesting thing about these dogs is their high body sensitivity. They are ultra-aware of touch and physical sensations, so they don't like to be startled or grabbed unexpectedly.

Best homes for a Borzoi

Borzois do best in a home where someone is often around, as these dogs do not like being alone. While they can live in flats, their large size can make apartment living challenging, especially if you live on a high floor.

As a gentle hound, Borzois do well in families with older children who know how to handle a dog properly. They are not recommended for homes with small children, though. Firstly, their large size means they could accidentally knock over a toddler. Secondly, these dogs don't respond well to rough handling and will not tolerate things like fur pulling.

These dogs can typically live harmoniously with other canines. However, because of their high prey drive, consider another breed if you have small pets like cats or rabbits.

FAQs about the Borzoi

The Pedigree Paws is committed to responsible breeding practices and ethical values for all cats and dogs. We only work with licensed, regulated, and experienced breeders who share our mission and values. Each puppy is born and raised in a secure, nurturing home environment (the breeder's home) with the mother dog and siblings.

Furthermore, our team ensures that each puppy undergoes thorough health check-ups and receives vaccinations before leaving the breeder's home. We also provide comprehensive health insurance coverage for the first five weeks to give you total peace of mind.

Borzoi puppies are affectionate and playful, and they grow into calm and well-mannered companions. They are full of love and devotion for their owners but dislike being left alone. So if you are rarely home, this may not be the best breed for you.

Borzois do great as companions for older children. However, they are not a good fit for small kids due to their large size and inability for rough handling.

Borzois typically get along well with other dogs, but if you have small animals in the home, including cats, you may wish to choose another breed. This is because, as a natural hunting dog, Borzois have a high prey drive and may struggle to see a fellow pet as a friend rather than prey.

We collaborate only with reliable Borzoi breeders who prioritise raising their puppies in nurturing home environments rather than impersonal commercial facilities, AKA puppy mills. Each breeder undergoes thorough screenings and security checks before being considered for partnership. We then run regular random checks to ensure everything is in order and standards do not slip.

Borzois can live for 9 to 13 years with good care. However, like all breeds, they are susceptible to some genetic health issues, such as Degenerative Myelopathy, Hypothyroidism, and Gastric Torsion.

But rest assured; we prioritise the health and well-being of your new puppy. Before joining your family, we offer a range of health services, including a thorough health check-up conducted by a licensed veterinarian, DNA testing to detect potential genetic health issues, age-appropriate core vaccinations, and five weeks of health insurance.

We strive to provide the highest quality care for your furry companion, giving you peace of mind and ensuring a long and healthy life for your new furry friend.

Pedigree Paws values the health and happiness of our Borzoi puppies and breeding dogs above all else. We ensure that our puppies receive the best nourishment and attention during their crucial developmental stages by allowing them to stay with their mother until they are naturally weaned.

Our puppies are usually available for adoption between 10-12 weeks old, depending on their individual growth and progress. Please get in touch with the breeder to learn more about a specific Borzoi puppy and when it is available.

We know it can be difficult to find a reliable pet breeder, especially if you can't visit in person. But don't worry; we're here to assist on every step of the journey. We'll give you plenty of photos of your Borzoi puppy, and you can arrange a video call with the breeder if you wish.

All Borzoi puppies are registered with the appropriate pedigree organisation before they go to their new homes. This is done to maintain breed standards and reduce the chances of inherited illnesses. The breeder will provide you with official registration documents that certify the pedigree status of your new Borzoi puppy.

We at Pedigree Paws are passionate about the welfare of our Borzoi puppies. Our breeders go to great lengths to provide each pup with the necessary care and socialisation.

This helps instil positive qualities and behavioural traits that will serve them well in their future homes. We aim to produce not only robust and healthy puppies but also friendly and well-mannered ones that will bring happiness to any family.

We recognise the importance of bringing home a furry friend who is healthy, well-mannered, and socialised. That's why we raise our Borzoi puppies with great care in a genuine family home with the mother dog and littermates, not in a cage at a commercial breeding centre.

Our breeders also collaborate closely with a certified veterinarian to guarantee each puppy is 100% healthy before they go to their new home.

Moving to a new home can be a scary experience for puppies. However, you can take certain steps to help reduce their stress levels.

Firstly, creating a comfortable and relaxing space where your furry friend can unwind is essential. Choose a quiet room, such as a bedroom. Add everything they need, including a cosy bed, fresh water, and nutritious food and give them a few hours to decompress here.

When they seem comfortable and confident, let them explore one room at a time and introduce family members gradually. This will prevent them from feeling overwhelmed and help them adjust to their new home in a relaxed manner.
