CLEAR ALLKnown as a hunting dog breed in Italy, the Bracco Italiano also makes an affectionate and charming canine companion. Their long ears, soulful expressions, and droopy lips are some of their most defining and endearing characteristics compared to other gundog breeds. They are thought to be an ancient breed that dates back to the 4th or 5th century B.C. The Bracco Italiano is also known as The Italian Pointing Dog, Italian Pointer, and Bracco.
Bracco Italianos are intelligent dogs with a tremendous amount of energy. They are well-suited to households with big yards, from single individuals to big families with children. However, note that Bracco Italianos are not natural watchdogs but will still let their owners know if they sense a change in their surroundings. If you wish to have an energetic, devoted dog this breed may be the right one for you, as long as you have the time and commitment to devote to their mental and physical stimulation needs.

The Bracco Italiano is a large dog breed weighing between 25 and 41 kg. Males typically stand between 60 to 67 cm at the shoulder, while females are slightly smaller, ranging from 56 to 64 cm.
The Bracco Italiano has a strong and muscular build, displaying a well-balanced, sturdy physique reflecting its rich history as a skilled pointer and versatile hunting companion. They further demonstrate their talents in motion, exhibiting a graceful, effortless, and ground-covering gait.
The Bracco Italiano's head is one of its most distinct features. It is long with lean cheeks and a slight convex profile. Their square muzzle is deep and well-developed, giving them an alert and intelligent expression together with their large, oval-shaped eyes (typically hazel, amber or brown).
Italian Pointers have long, floppy ears set at eye level that hang down close to the cheeks and have a velvety texture.
The Bracco Italiano breed has a short, dense coat lying close to the skin, which provides good protection from the elements. The fur is shorter and finer around the head, ears, and the front of the legs, but their coats give an overall glossy appearance.
Italian Pointers come in various coat colours, including white, orange and white, amber and white, or chestnut and white. However, their base colour will typically be white, with the secondary colour appearing as patches or ticking.
The Bracco Italiano is known for its friendly and affectionate nature, making it an excellent companion and family dog.
Bracco Italianos possess a lot of energy and stamina as they were initially bred to be hunting dogs. Because of this, they require regular exercise to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Engaging in activities like long walks, runs, or playtime in a secure, fenced yard is essential for their well-being.
However, despite their energetic nature, Bracco Italianos are known for their calm and laid-back demeanour indoors. They are content to relax and be a part of family activities. In addition, they typically form strong bonds with their family members and are known to be gentle, patient, and tolerant around children.
Another natural trait of these hunting dogs is their alertness and protectiveness. Italian Pointers have a keen sense of smell and remain constantly alert to their surroundings. Thus, if they perceive a threat in or outside the home, they will alert you and ensure you are safe.
The Italian Pointer is also a highly intelligent and trainable breed. They are quick learners and are eager to please their owners.
However, you should note that they are independent thinkers and can have a stubborn streak, sometimes choosing to do things their way. Therefore, consistent and positive reinforcement-based training is essential. It is also crucial to show this dog their place in the "pack" so they learn to seek your guidance and direction.
Bracco Italianos are generally sociable with other dogs and pets, as well as with strangers. They have a friendly disposition and tend to get along well with new people and animals, especially if they have been properly socialised from a young age.
Bracco Italianos thrive on human companionship and do not cope well with long periods of isolation. Thus, they do best with owners who will allow them to be a core part of the family and include them in their daily activities.
Thanks to their calm, gentle temperament, Italian Pointers make lovely pets for families with children. They are a particularly excellent match energy-wise with older kids, as they will enjoy hours of running around the garden together.
Because of their hunting history, these dogs have a moderate prey drive towards smaller animals. However, proper socialisation from an early age can help minimise this, allowing them to live harmoniously with other pets in the home.
